Hello to all I have a 87 Camry 2.0 manual and have the following problem. Only when the car is extremely hot (been driving it a while) and then you turn off engine then try to start it again after 2 minutes or so the car will start right up but the rpm's will drop way low to 400 sometimes lower and sound like it will cut off. The problem so far is easily fixed by giving it a lot of gas then driving the car or turning the car off and starting it again. The wired thing is it only does it intermittently not all the time and only when the car is hot and has been driven a lot.
Things I have done to try to fix this. Taken off the EGR and try to clean it. It was so dirty I replaced with new EGR. After replacing the EGR it has only done the same problem 2 times again but not as bad as before replacement of EGR. However it still did it 2 times after replacing EGR which indicates to me there is another problem at hand here. The car also has a new radiator, starter, battery, alternator, thermostat, air filter, belts all, and a new radiator cap. Please advise and help me as to if someone out there on the forums knows what this problem is or has experienced a similar problem and what can be done to fix this problem. Thanks very much for you help.

I'd be looking for a sticky idle air control valve first, if it were my car. It is likely that you could remove it, clean it much like you did your ERG valve except it will be saveable, and slap it back on there.

That is a great idea thanks for responding back. Do you happened to know where the idle air control valve is on my car if not I will have to look in the manual hopefully its there?

I don't know exactly where, or if yours is electrical of vacuum operated (probably electric) but it will probably be mounted on the intake manifold just beyond the throttle body, meaning you have your big plastic intake tube connected to the throttle body, and the throttle body is bolted to the intake, and then right in that area will be the valve. It may also be a part of the throttle body itself and could be removeable separately from the throttle body.

You would do well to remove both the idle air control (IAC) valve and the throttle body (TB) and clean them to looking like new. Both will look pretty cruddy. Get a 2 or 3 cans (it goes quicker than you think) of good throttle body spray cleaner and some emory cloth or fine sandpaper. The TB should clean up to looking new inside if you've done it right. You should probably resist the temptation to remove the throttle plate. The IAC valve will probably be a bit more tricky to clean well. Wear some rubber gloves because the cleaner is rude to skin.

Your manual will show you exactly where the IAC is and how to remove these parts etc. You may need new gaskets for them, but many times parts like this will come off the car clean and the gasket is not harmed to the point you'd have to replace it.

Also, you should inspect and replace any vacuum hose that is not 100%. By inspect, I mean actually lay hands on each hose for its whole length, not just a visual inspection. Vacuum hoses can look just peachy but actually be junk, and you won't know until it falls apart in your hand.

Clean your throttle body bore and plate real nice. Both sides and where it seats.
This is good to do no matter what.
Take some time and check all your vacuum and intake connections and lines for leaks.
Then, dive in and clean the idle air motor - be careful here with strong solvents.
Still have a problem? We'll go from there, but you did a very good thing anyways!

Thanks very much to all of you. I can't find the iac I will have to look for it on the car some more or in the manual. I will clean both soon thanks again. 1 more question to all though have any of you had the same or similar problem on a 87 to 91 toyota camry?

Not on a Camry, but the IAC on my current Lincoln sticks, especially when cold. I'l be doing on mine what I recommended on yours whenever we get more good weather.

The earlier 9th gen Corollas the IAC is right on the TB. There are holes before and after the TB for the IAC.

Idle systems are pretty much the same on newer FI cars.
The same basic stuff applies.
And we have to get the basic stuff right no matter what.

Shake the PCV and make sure it makes a clicking noise.

My dad's Lexus ES300 suddenly developed a low idle one morning, and that was it.

I once had an Accord that wasn't quite right until I replaced the PCV.

Also keep in mind that sometimes the PCV hose fails, or gets filled with slime.

It is on one of the 2 rubber hoses that enter the valve cover.

Hello there,
Can someone please help me with a question about my 87 Camry 2.0 5 speed. I am trying to find/locate the PCV Valve and I can’t. I think the car may not have one because I looked up parts for the car and it did not list the pcv valve as a part I could get. Can someone please advise me if the car has a pcv valve and if so where exactly it is located on the engine and under the hood. I appreciate your help in this matter.
