My 1976 280Z 4-speed has 165K actual miles on the bottom end of its original 2.8 liter EFI inline 6 motor. The motor pulls 18 1/2 inches of vacuum at a hot 900 rpm idle. The cylinder head was redone about 10k miles ago. It's a bit cold blooded on a cold morning. But otherwise runs well, pulls STRONG and gets decent gas milage--depending how its driven.

Here's the deal. I drive it pretty hard. She uses about a quart of oil every 1000 miles. I DO NOT want to rebuild the bottom end. The oil control rings in these motors are known to be of low tension by design. The bores generally show VERY little wear---even with milage in excess of 2 or 300,000. The RINGS wear, NOT the bores.

Soooo---what SYNTHETIC oil could you suggest that might reduce consumption somewhat. I'm currently running Mobil 1 synthetic 10W-40. I don't mind spending extra money on "boutique oils". I have a Redline dealer within 12 miles of my home. Keep in mind that the valvetrain is solid, so it likes higher ZDDP levels. I live in South Florida where temps range from 35 degrees on an UNUSUAL (like 2 weeks ago!) January morning to 98 degrees in the afternoon in July. Water temps in this car never exceed 195 degrees. She has NO OVERDRIVE---highway RPMs are between 3500-4000.

I had a '76 280Z 2+2, that had had a later 5spd put in it.
It was a neat car, and made great engine noises.
The 2+2, with a much longer wheelbase and more weight, steered like a truck, however.
None of the first gen Zs came with power steering, which was really only an issue when parking or making a sharp turn at low speed.

Honestly, I don't think that your oil consumption can be reduced by switching oils. It might be reduced by changing to an overdrive transmission, if you do a lot of highway driving.

The 5 speed from a 1977 car is going in this Thursday. But I have my eye on a 3.90 gear to replace the 3.54 stocker. :)

Nice car.

Just for S&G why don't you try M1 10W40 high mileage? I'd say you have a 50/50 chance of it reducing your oil use. If that did not work then maybe something a bit thicker.

What weight was originally spec'd for it?

EDIT: Sorry I forgot all M1 10W40 was high mileage. Maybe try some 15W50.

Whoops--yep, already using Mobil 1 10W-40 HM. Years ago 20w-50
dino was commonly used in these cars. That viscosity seems a bit outdated today.

It's only outdated in this country. I'd bet it would hold up most excellently.

I love those cars. Test drove an earlier 240 and would have bought it but the frame rails were rusted. Loved driving it though. Friend of mine had a 260 that he would beat the tar out of all the time and it ran great!

I heart any Z car.... Been one of my life long aspirations to restore a Z and do some modern upgrades at the same time.

Timeless classics they are.

Sorry, my post had nothing to do with your question, just struck a chord in my brain.

Sorry my comment had nothing to do with the OP question either. These are one of the only Japanese cars with a lot of soul.

Awesome! What a neat car! I had a '78 4speed 280z for 12 years...I still miss it. Wish I would have kept it! Always wanted to put a 5speed in it.

Anyway, it burned about a 1/2 qt of oil between 3k OCI...didn't seem to matter what weight it was (I used GTX 20/50 in the summer).

I agree with trying M1 15/50...

I'd give M1 15W-50 a try - it's a great oil that 'behaves' more like a 10W-50, so it still has great flow at start up. I know in Florida you're not worried about 'cold starts' per say. That oil is also easy to get.....

Jugs means 5 quarts, 1 quart was a typo. But I never saw 5 quart jug M1 15W50 at my WM's.
