a buddy of mine has a 2010 dodge 3500 with the 6.7 cummins, i do all his maintenance for him. truck has 13,000 miles and i did his oil change yesterday with a mobil 1 filter and 12 quarts of chevron delo 15W40. just wondering whats the best out of mobil delvac 15W40, shell rotella and chevron delo in terms of viscosity retention, preotection etc? ive been hearing that mobil delvac is the best out of the three.

I actually heard the same about the Mobil, however, the Chevron Delo outsells the mobil by an extremely large margin, and the chevron delo is $1.15 more a gallon & a $1.25 more a quart.

When I worked at AZ, the rotella was the #2 behind the Chevron Delo with Mobil Delvac in the rear.

I know rotella is the most popular. Ive heard that it creates a smell for the first 500 miles or so. Ive never tried it though.

I run Mobil Delvac 1300 in my 6.7 Cummins. So far so good. You can't go wrong with any of the big 3 HDEO. There's a rebate right now on Delvac. Go to Mobil Delvac's website.

Agreed. The Big three HDEO's are all good oils. I often wonder about rebates though. If there is a rebate, then the price must have been too high to begin with. Just like buying a car. I just wish they would get their pricing reasonable to begin with. Like my oil supplier. A 15w40 CJ-4 synthetic blend, delivered to my door, for a little over $9 a gallon as of my last purchased a couple of months ago. But then, they do not have to pay for all that advertising, truck shows, race cars, etc like the big boys do. Oops, I mean like the customer does in the product pricing.

Actually I would say its Rotella, Delvac, Delo in that order in heavy trucks (As far as sales). With everyhting else well down in sales.

In a Detroit S60 14.0L EGR running 20,000 mile oil drains I couldnt tell the difference between CJ4 variants in visc, oxid, nitr, tbn, tan and wear metals. Oil consumption is also similar. A gallon every 17,000 miles which equates to a quart per liter every 60,000 miles.

There is such little difference between the "big three" of diesel engine oils really I would just run whatever is on sale that week.

IMHO TBN retention isn't the biggest deal with a 6.7 or any 2008+ compliant truck cause the oil is going to get sooted and fuel to death LONG before the TBN runs out.

Best out there @ What? Any of those 3 brands will protect and serve his cummins well...

Remember it's not a popularity contest! You can look into the UOA thread for most of your answers... Though UOA don't tell us everything, but it is a start...

Most importantly is his OCI and his driving habits...
