Does anyone know which 5w40 has the most zinc? I know there is Mobil 1, Castrol and Rotella T and a few others. I want something I can purchase off the shelf that has the most zinc in a 5w40 grade. Thank you.

I think the original Delvac 1 had the highest ZDDP of all the commonly available oils. It's equiv is available at Wal Mart under the "turbo diesel truck 5-40" label.

Most UOA show between 1200 and 1400 PPM of each zinc and P.

Hi,
coffee - While your question is specific, remember it is the sum of the parts that make the final product! Zinc in its various forms is but one component

Cujet's comments are an accurate answer to your question

Thank you both for the input but I thought Rotella T Syn had more zinc than Mobil 1 but I may be wrong. Unfortunately they are both going SM rating soon and dropping zinc levels which really stinks. I wonder what oil and grade has the most now that will not be changing spec soon? Would I need to stick with a 15w40 to get more zinc?

Hi,
coffee - Do NOT concern yourself about a dual rated SAE40 HDEO that has a CJ-4/SM rating

The synthetic lubricants mentioned (Del 1 & Rotella T) have all of the anti-wear and other additives you will ever need!

Doug

Would it be better for me to use a 15w40 dino or a 5w40 synthetic? Is the zinc content better for one versus the other? I live in a warm climate so grade is probably not an issue.

coffee,

From your posts above it seems that cost may be an issue but grade probably is not. In that case I'd just go with a 15w40 dino over the 5W-40 synthetic.

Just happen to have at hand the Zn and P figures for a couple of Chevron oils. For Delo 15w40 LE they are 1300 ppm and 1200 ppm respectively. For Delo 5W-40 they are 1510 ppm and 1360 ppm respectively.

I doubt your engine would know the difference in the ZDDP content. I'd guess the other major brands are not too dissimilar from Chevron, and that, as Doug mentioned, the additive package will be adequate to your needs regardless of variations. It's hard to go wrong with any HDEO.

I was actually thinking of Delo on the way home and will probably go with the 15w40 version as my vehicles have high mileage anyway. Thanks for the input.
