Will 5W20 be ok to use in the hot Texas summers? From mid June till the end of August the temperature ranges from 95 to 105 degrees just about everyday in the D/FW area. I have always put 10W30 in everything all year long. The cars I have now are the first cars I have used 5W20, well in the one I have done a oil change on. I knew 5w20 would be ok for the winter, but both cars will be due for a change around June. Both cars have GDI engines and I normally use dino or a synblend, the only reason I have Synpower in the Forte now is because of the roll back price at wal mart with the $5 dollar Valvoline coupon a few months back made it too good of a deal to pass up. So will the 5W20 be ok or should I use 5w30 for the summer?

If it was me, I'd use a top quality 5w-20 with confidence. But if I wanted to do a 4-6 month OC again in Oct/Nov/Dec I certainly could use a 5w30 in June. I live in NC (also plenty hot) and my personal mechanic suggests sticking with 5w-20 year round due to the closer tolerances and tight oil pathways in Hyundai's newer motors. Not sure if that's fact or myth.

5w20 all year is ok and will actually be better in most cases. 5w20 runs cooler, gets everywhere slightly faster and is more stable in most cases.

Hyundai / Kia I believe state in their owners manuals that 5W20 (what is stamped on the oil fill cap) is prefered - however based on ambient temps you can safely use 5W30 or 10W30 as well ... This is what my 2010 Elantra owners manual states (2014 owners manuals stating the same ?)

I have found SOPUS products (Pennzoil / Quaker State) to run the best in my Hyundai and I have stayed with the recommended 5W20 with no issues year round with proper OCI's (5K miles for dino / 7.5K miles for synthetic - using Hyundai / KIA OEM oil filters which are excellent). I did use a summer run of 5K miles with Mobil Super 5000 5W30 and found that for the first 1.5 miles my engine was a bit "baulky" and slower to warm up versus using the 5W20 where a smooth emgine warm up transition (i.e. less baulky) was realized - gas mileage with both grades of oil was about the same ... So based on my experiences - I have stayed with the recommended 5W20 weight oil and for various reasons I use either QSUD 5W20 or PP 5W20 for best results .

Yeah that oils seems thin when its warm. After talking to some oil reps. I'd alsomost run a good 10w30 synthetic, it is suppose to flow the same as a 5w-20 cold. I had asked the RP rep cause the 5.4 fords state 5-20 & he suggested with a good synthetic in the summer it would just as well or better than most 5-20? idk

According to your car manufacturer 5-20 is just fine and is "preferred." But you can also use 5-30. Was the egg first? Or the chicken? Good quandary to have! Pick either and win!

I use M1 0-20 year round here in Illinois, and we get temps in the 95-109 range quite often anymore. No problems at all.

Run a quality 5w30 synthetic in the summer and 5W-20 in the winter (or 0/5w30 year around). Also watch out for fuel dilution with the D.I. engine.

Mostly myth... If passages were too small to oil properly with 30 vs 20, the engine would burn up from oil starvation on the first cold morning when the 20W is 15-20x thicker than at operating temp...

Tolerance has zero to do with smaller size passages, just means engine assembly is closer to specs than a wide tolerance engine that may be looser or tighter(or some combination of both)...

Not impressed with some UOAs in Hyundai/KIA engines on 5w20. Since your in TX, have a GDI engine and the manual/warranty allows 5w30 I can't imagine any reason to run a 5w20. JMO.

Since I like using synblends, with the 5W30 I have the pennzoil blend with 50% synthetic as an option and the GTX blend 5W30 has 50% synthetic as well. The 5W20 GTX blend only has 10% and I haven't seen the pennzoil blend in 5W20 anywhere.

You've seen them on here?

And if the ones you have seen are not impressive was it due to the oil viscosity?
