I am the designated oil change guy in the family. I have 2 F150s and an Escalade that i use 5W-30 in. My 991 uses 5W-40 Motul - so it’s separate.

My daughter and two granddaughters have Honda Civics - a 2019, 2017 and 2014. They all call for 0W-20.

I'm thinking of using Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W-30 in everything. Is that a good idea? It would make my oil stash more manageable. (Both lawnmowers also use 5W-30.

Mostly, yes. I still have a couple jugs 5W-20 in stash, but will stick with 5W-30 going forward on mostly everything. I’m in the South, so temperature not much of an issue.

I don’t see how having one viscosity makes it any more manageable than having two viscosities on hand, unless you only have space to store one jug at a time. I live in a small condo with not very much storage space and I still usually have 4 or 5 jugs of oil on hand, of two different viscosities

Use 0/5w-40 in everything instead. Castrol and mobil are very well priced right now and are porche a40 licensed so all are guaranteed great. I run 40 instead of 20 in two vehicles a 16 and 21 currently and ran 0w-40 in a 2015 civic. Run 15w-40 in my ope and old trucks but I'd switch everything to any 0/5w-40 if I wanted one oil.

Having everything be the same does bring about a bit of simplicity though. Won’t end up with fractional leftovers of different brands and viscosities to mix up or just end up recycling later.

I only need to stock 2 different oils. 0W20 & 5W30. Only use full synthetic name brand. Catch on sale a lot from Walmart. The oil in the cars get what the oil cap says. 3K oil and filter changes.

5w-40 for everything sounds even better if you're wanting one grade & already using it. Outside of that idea & the one you bring up should work too w/5w-30 R&P in everything. Doesn't sound like you plan to do extended intervals & that Valvoline is getting some praise here so far.

I don't see the obsession folks have with needing to use one oil for everything unless you felt the one grade was "best" for all of your applications.

I would stock Valvoline Restore and Protect in 5W-20 and 5W-30 and call it good. Having 2 grades in the same line, I wouldn't feel bad about throwing a quart of the 5W-20 in with the 5W-30 or vice versa if I didn't have enough for a complete oil change in a particular grade or for topping off as needed.
