52 MPG ain't nuthin'! My 2008 VW Passat will easily top that. On downhills. At 12% grade. With the engine turned off, coasting.

How many total miles? What was the starting and ending elevation in feet? How was the mileage measured?

I have a feeling that there must be some stretch of blue ridge parkway where you could shut off the engine and still cover quite a few miles :-)

Got on the Parkway at 5000 ft, climbed to 6200 or so, got off around 5000 ft. I couldnt coast as much as I liked, because the car would run away down hill, used a lot of brakes. The mileage on the highway bested the Parkway mileage, as it brought the average up.

About 125 miles total, measured via the computer. Wifes mileage was checked via pencil and paper previously, and it was accurate. I don't expect to reach this very often, as I was just trying to prove a point to her. I do expect to average in 40.

And this was with an automatic, compact car, not a sub compact (they claim it seats five, but I doubt it), and an engine rated at over 155 hp.

And the air was on the entire time.

Any car really. If you try hard enough 50 MPG in most regular passenger cars isn't impossible to reach.

Well, except sports cars and dog old giant wagons maybe.

I've cracked the 50 mpg barrier only once in my life (for a full tank anyway). 1989 Honda Civic DX hatchback with a 1.5 L engine. 55 mph and a stiff tailwind pushing me all the way from Iowa to Chicago.

Hey, my wagon can hit 50mpg down hill coasting.

Must be a gas engine with that grade of oil.

We have a winner. 2012 Mazda 3 Grant Touring, 6 spd auto, skyactiv

This is over an entire tank I assume... if not it doesn't count. If so that is very good, past diesel territory.

Best I ever got was 53mpgUS over 500 mile tank in a 1992 VW Jetta TD 5sp, best I have ever got in the Corolla was 46mpgUS over a 375mile tank.

Regretfully, I don't get the car for an entire tank. leadfoot uses it mostly. My point was that it could be achieved driving judiciously, and 40 mpg should be obtainable.

IIRC I did 38 (tank average, just just a portion of the trip) on the blue ridge in my then brand new 135i convertible... Taking it back from the BMW performance center. You can really do well on those hills if you learn to appreciate physics. Mine is a 4400#, 300hp car.

I'm not sure how cherry picking a route for only one or two trips can be considered valid data. If it is, then there are times when I can do that with my 6 year old paid for Hyundai and my wife's 6 year old paid for Subaru.
