Bullet resistant glass is the proper term here. And the 308 only did better than the 30-06 because the glass was so compromised by the two previous rounds. Full bore 30-06 and .308 are nearly identical in power. Indeed the .308 was born because the new modern propellants developed in the 30's and 40's did not necessitate a 63mm long casing and the Govt was all about saving weight and materials in the post WW2 budget crunches, as well as having a shorter case for an automatic rifle. Thats how we got the T65 experimental cartridge, later the 7.62 NATO and the .308.
