Looking for input on the transmission fluid in my SVT Contour. I put in RP syncromax 5 yrs ago. I've only got about 30k on the fluid. I'm somewhat concerned of the age of the fluid, but the trans still shifts like butter. Opinions? Would you change it because of age or run it another year or two. Trans is Ford MTX_75. This is a manual transmission for those unaware.

Me personally? I'd change it. I don't like the idea of leaving any fluid in for much longer than five years. Granted gear oil lives a pretty easily life compared to engine oil. A lot of people probably wouldn't change it until it starts shifting like [censored].

whats it gonna cost $30? its worth every penny

Well, I'm definately going to use Syncromax again, but I don't want to waste a good lube. As has been discussed, MTF is much less abused when compared to ATF. Replacement is only 4 qts so @$13 plus tax, only $60 or so...

A lot of shearing occurs in MT's.

I would send in a VOA of the Synchromax and then do a UOA sample to see if and how much shearing has occurred.

Even with just 30K I would change it out do to 5 years in service. $60 would not be a deterent to me.

30K is not much.

I have seen over 200K on factory dino gear lube. Maybe live on the edge and push it out to 35K...

I agree, especially for an aftermarket fluid that's supposed to be "better". Unless you think it got contaminated, I'd leave it in for at least another year.

Before I'd spend the money on VOA and UOA, I'd just change it.

Love to see that on UOA ^^

I do change it out, since it working perfectly for you for 5 year , I do put in same type of fluid.

Very true. I'd bet that a LOT of manual-transmission cars in the US never have the gear oil changed.

There was UOA of a Subaru trans on here with 100,000+ miles on the factory fill and as I remember the UOA came back fine.

Look to the OCI of the original fluid in the manual. More than likely it was a long intergval, if not "lifetime." The RP should be able to do at least as well as that, likely better. I found a '99 Contour manual online and it said MT fluid should be changed at 60K mile intervals, no time listed

Seldom does oil fail based on time, unless the storage conditions are appalling (stored on a beach, stored in a jungle, etc.). An MT oil will shear but the usual symptom of that is deterioration of shift quality and, frankly, I doubt 30K is long enough to shear the RP significantly. My advice it to wait until you reach the 60K interval.

JRed above said it well.

That's the same basic gearbox that's in the street going Escort Cossie RS/WRC.

Of course the actual WRC prepped machines had sequential 6, or 7 speed FFD/X-Trac drivetrains.

Glad to hear you've had great luck/results with the SynchroMax.
