Elementary school sent application form home with my daughter. Is it illegal for a 3rd grader to not apply for finger printing? If finger printing would be in some way to her benefit please explain why. Thanks!

Could potentiality be beneficial if "something" ever happens to your child........

So what if your daughter does have a criminal history? They have to teach her. It sounds like they're running names on everyone for grins...

If they don't let her do extracurricular stuff or otherwise make you feel uneasy, storm in and ask why.

Bee Ess. There are better ways to i.d. children, that is an intrusive big brother practice.

What possible criminal history could a third grader have? Is it just me, or is this moral panic taken to a new level? As was already suggested, there's merit in having the fingerprints of your children somewhere for safekeeping, in your possession.

If they think your daughter is DB Cooper or assisted the Unabomber in some way, they're out to lunch.

Was this really meant for students? Is it for parental volunteers?

I work with the youth in my church. Had to undergo a background check.

It makes more sense that this is for parental volunteers than it is for students.

Even the form doesn't seem geared towards students but towards faculty, staff or volunteers.

My wife was volunteering at my kids' school. She did fine last year. This year the superintendent wants to do a criminal background check on all volunteers, even though volunteer plus kid won't be out of eyeball range of the teacher.

This application though seems like it should have accompanying explanatory paperwork. I'd hold on to it and not return it until such an explanation can be provided.

You should definitely follow up with this thread after you call and get the low-down as to why the school wants this info.

The form is so generic, it's hard to believe it's for a child (ie, no place for child's or parent/guardian's name). The processing fee makes the whole thing even stranger.

Is it possible your child lost some accompanying paperwork/explanation? It seems like the kind of form that a parent who volunteers or coaches would have to fill out.

I had to go through the same thing prior to volunteering at my daughter's pre-school. They required a background check, fingerprints, and a class on sexual abuse prevention.

When I was in third grade we all took a trip to the police station and gave our finger prints then. Doesn't bother me now and wouldn't if my kids went and did the same thing

Maybe it was just left over on the xerox and the teacher grabbed it with a stack of homework?

I returned the blank application unsigned today. Back ground check and finger printing is not for my 3rd grader. It is for volunteers for the Halloween party at school. School needs volunteers to serve food and work kids games. Most of the teachers are working the haunted house. I figured this out on my own today. Still have not received any accompanying explanatory paperwork for the criminal history verification application form.

That makes sense. In any case, such checks on volunteers and so forth are SOP these days.
