Did they expect it to make a profit? I thought it was just made as a halo car and to develop stuff that would trickle down to other cars.

It is a halo car. Toyota never had intended to make a profit on this car. Look at VW with the Bugatti Veyron(sp). It cost VW somewhere in the neighbourhood of $7 million to produce the car yet they were only selling it over a million. The technology that went into the Lexus is pretty impressive. Maybe the naysayers should read up on the specs of the car before they start bashing it.

And the Nurburgring Nordschleife and Top Gear Test Track lap times, and the gushingly positive qualitative descriptions of how the car is to drive.

But they won't, and you know it. Apparently the 0-60 time, the nameplate, and the price are the end of the story. Coincidentally, one of them drives a Camaro. Hmmm....

Probably not a bad strategy, since when they run their defensive safety 'apology' ads on TV, and flash their "superior" product lineup at the end, there is not ONE SINGLE MODEL that appeals to me asthetically IN THE LEAST!! In fact they are ALL *****.

This thing is not the picture of beauty, but at least it is a little more visually (and performanc wise) exciting than their present plebian lineup.

Let's not start with all of the N-Ring BULL (pre-production ringers DO NOT COUNT), as it's been the source of so many 100+ page flame wars on every other site.
Top Gear is not even worth laughing at, and their rag is not fit to be toilet paper.

WOW, so now you're going all snooty/uppity 'country club' with your used Bimmer??!
Guess what, with the right tires this "mulletmobile" will show your Teutonmobile the fast way around a road course (as WELL AS destroying it in the quarter mile).
All the while with 130K miles on the clock ("...but, but it was supposed to fall apart as he drove it off of the dealer's lot", I can hear you whimpering).

The reason the nameplate makes a difference is that unlike you (and many/most others on this site it seems), I have a BIG problem with handing JAPAN (or any other foreign country) that much coin while so many U.S. citizens are unemployed, starving, sick and dying.
Especially not when I have a choice of domestic product that outperforms (in ALL areas) your Nippon 'supercar' for MUCH less $$$$$!

Impressive specs do not always add up to an impressive end product, time will tell.
