I have a 2005 Chevrolet Impala with 3400 V6 engine. I've never owned a car with this engine before. My 98 Jimmy had the 4.3 V6 and these engines were known for being naturally noisy. Does this hold true for the 3400 V6 as well? Perhaps it will sound quieter after my next oil change, I will switch to Mobil1 Synthetic.

I hear a lot of piston slap complaints about these. It's something that pretty much goes away as it warms up, but I generally agree they are a bit noisy for my tastes.

start up as in a few seconds? or in a few minutes? piston slap sounds a little like a diesel rattle and takes a few mins to disappear

Every GM 3.1 or 3.4L we've had in the family was like this. Regardless, they are still a great engine. Good power, great economy, parts and service readily available, etc.

They are noisy when cold. I've had both and like the 3400's power over the 3100, it's more impressive than the spread looks on paper.

My 3400 is a bit noisy at startup. Most of the ones I have heard have been valve train noise at startup. This is my 07 Equinox.

The last time the oil was changed (I usually do my own oil changes), the weather was -11, so the oil was changed at Wal-Mart. I'm guessing a Pennzoil or Super Tech filter. Just bought a case of Napa Gold (Wix) filters for it on sale that will be used for the duration.

We have a 3100 in our 2001 Malibu and it is always noisy. Basically from the factory but is much much worse at 120000kms. It is always louder than my diesel and uses oil and coolant and hates starting in the cold. From what we have seen with this motor we wont be getting anything like it again. It ticks like nothing else. Once it warms up it still does not go away at all.
