stillwater, ok
driving a 3.1 v6 in a 98 pontiac grand am, just finished the arx cleaning phase with hav. 5w30 oil. considering switching to synthetic at this point, looking at mobil1 5w30, pp 5w30, or gc 0w30 for 7500 oci. been using wix filters, car has around 95k miles and is mostly highway driving. any recommendations on these oils? thanks

My choice would be GC. 7500 highway miles on GC should be a breeze in a 3.1 V6, assuming yours doesn't have the infamous GM intake coolant leak. I'd have that checked out before considering extending your OCI's.

Whatever is cheapest with a 7.5K OCI any one of those will be fine with the exception if you have the infamous intake gasket leak.

My daughter had a 94 GP with 3.1 v6 (which Dad took care of) never used a drop of oil. Car had 105K when she "upgraded". I used any name brand on sale & used Fram filters (until BITOG) then switched to Wix. One time I did have a valve tap, but I added a quart of Rislone to a fresh oil change & it stopped within a few hundred miles.

Have 204k on 1992 Regal Limited with the 3.1. Bought it at 130k. Using Valvoline Maxlife 10w40 on 4k changes and it uses about .5 qts between changes.

Any of those oils should work fine. I guess my vote would also be GC but you cannot go wrong with any of them.

A guy I know has a 98 Grand Am with the 3.1 with over 200k on it, and his previous 2 cars were a Honda and an Acura I believe, and as much as he hates the Grand Am cause it's so boring he says it's been the most reliable of the cars he's owned. No intake gasket has ever been done on it either.

I had a 1993 Beretta GT with a 3.1 v6, that thing had a great engine. only issue i had was the oil seal from the sending unit and the transmission starting to act up. used castrol syntec blend with purlator one filter. Used 10w30 in the winter, 20w50 in the summer. 150 miles, first major mechanical issue - the transmission would slip out of gear when stopping once in a long while.

I'd check the castrol synthetic blend or pure synthetic.

enjoy!
