Kind of found the list interesting. Should individual credit scores of the residents of a city be part of the home buying process? Very surprised to see any city in UT listed. Scores are Median credit scores.

1. South Bend, IN-448
2. West Jordan, UT-492
3. Sugar Land, TX-511
4 (tie). Fort Worth, TX-524
4. (tie)McKees Rock, PA-524
6. New Orleans, LA-535
7. Fort Smith, AR-536
8. La Crosse, WI-538
9. Bay shore, NY-547.5
10 (tie). Beavercreek, OH-552
10 (tie). McKeesport, PA-552
12. San Diego, CA-568
13. East St. Louis, IL-574
14. Chester, PA-585
15. Las Vegas, NV-589.5
16. Camden, NJ-593
17(tie) Harvey, IL-595
17 (tie). North Port, FL-595
19. West Memphis, AR-597
20.(tie) Deer Park, NY-598
20. (tie) Inkster, MI-598

I assume Beavercreek, OH is low because of Wright Patt AFB. It's not a broke, poor ghetto town at all. I imagine San Diego gets pulled down by the Navy and Marines.

Yea, that surprised me too. For kicks and giggles, I looked up average household income for West Jordan, and three neighboring cities. West Jordan was in second of the four cities, so it's not like it is plagued with poverty.

The US average is 702 or 714, depending if you go with Experian or VantageScore. The Utah average is 730, so it does seem odd.

Perhaps West Jordan is a prime place to open one of those fix your credit car sales places. Or a payday loan store.

Plenty of those (buy here-pay here) on State street in Sandy and Murray, Utah. Also-there are at least 4 large auto dealers that specialize buying salvage automobiles and fixing them- and then reselling them. Most are near new. I should add the consumer reviews for these dealers mentioning both the vehicles themselves and after purchase support (when those vehicles have issues) is VERY MIXED.
And yes very surprising about the city of West Jordan-but it's a nice place to live as well.

@GON, what was the criteria to be included in the list?
Azj,

The article didn't go deep. Published was just the median credit score. I assume the big three credit unions sell this data for marketing purposes, and the big three were the original publisher of the data. I imagine a lot of credit card companies that give almost zero credit limit and huge fees will pay big for this information.

My first thought when I saw South Bend at the top was that these were all college towns. Some don’t ring a bell though so I’m probably wrong.

McKees Rocks is a low rent district probably because it's very near Neville Island and Neville Island has a chemical Factory on it that stinks. So no one wants to live there. McKeesport used to be a decent town until the steel mill shut down, but that was back in the '70s and it's been going downhill ever since. What they forgot the list was Braddock. Braddock is really bad. And there's another place called Brownsville, it is basically a bunch of abandoned businesses because there's no life left in that small town as far as a business district goes. Many many buildings that have been left abandoned so long that the roofs are not keeping the water out so basically the interior of all of them are totally ruined. A few years ago McKeesport was listed as the city with the highest crime rate per capita. None of those cities that I listed above are places where you would want to walk on the street at night. And even being there in the daytime requires you to be very alert and basically is not a place to stick around.

I'm suprised Vegas is down as far as 15. A large cash economy that won't show on credit reports combined with the easy availability of gambling can't help.
