Hi everyone, looking for recommendations on an oil change interval, oil and filter recommendation for this vehicle. It's in Montreal Canada so they have 5 months per year of freezing temperatures with no engine preheat on the start. The owner has been using mineral oil and monthly oil changes since new. He probably won't do UOA. That's the engine spec below.

What he's doing sounds good enough, I would think the transmission would give up before the engine in urban delivery duty so I would change that fluid regularly too. It seems these don't have a drain plug so it might be worthwhile getting a pan with one installed and do some regular spill and fills.

How many kilometers on it as of now ? if its over 250000k
i would start at 20000 kilometer oci and step it up from there.
Mobil 1 ep 5w30 or a euro 5 or 0w30 would be my choice.

I'm thinking of going with this approach:
M1 EP 5w30 every 3 months or 30,000 KM
Transmission fluid change same time
Transmission filter changed every 3 intervals (9 months 90,000 km)

This is a normal guy, what's a good oil filter for this vehicle at Canadian Tire / Walmart? Any advice on the transmission filter and fluid?

In parallel, going to investigate a transmission pan with a drain plug to be swapped out by the mechanic at the next fluid change.

I would look into Petro-Canada products. But you have to find a distributor from their website, otherwise the prices are crazy.
The distributors have very reasonable prices. They will also have the ATF+4 for the transmission.

They have a European version of their Supreme Synthetic if you want to extend the OCIs.

It was an adventure finding one for my friend in Montreal. That Petro Canada Web site is terrible. I am going to call the company tomorrow and find out if they offer the products. Do they have a line of engine / transmission filters that you know?

He informs me he has about 120,000 KM on it and they replaced the transmission under warranty a few months back earlier this year. You definitely called it.

With 30k intervals, I would get the fram ultra. Available at Canadian tire, one of the best off the shelf filters out there and good for extended drain intervals.

And yes, transmission on these don’t last that long, had a 2012 before and had it replaced twice! So on its 3rd tenant by 220k when I traded it in. Engine was flawless though

Yes, their website is terrible, but once you find a distributor, you should be set, as they have a good assortment of lubricants.

As far as filters, no they do not have them.

I would recommend calling a local Dodge dealer, sometimes their prices are similar or better than Canadian Tire or Auto Source and you know you’re getting an OEM filter.

I've got a 2015 Caravan. I would get the Fram Ultras off Rockauto. Buy 5-6 at a time and with the shipping cost and 5 pct off its cheaper (last time i checked they were under $12 CDN each). The Ultra at Canadian tire is $20 each before taxes.

Since he's changing the oil once a month, I'd switch to a 0w30 or 0w-40 Synthetic and run it for 20,000 km and leave the filter on for two oil changes (40,000 km) .

Agree with above post. One oil that's meant for extended OCIs is VW 504/507 - the test itself implies oil has to hold up for 650 engine hours. VW 504/507 oils come in 0w30 and 5w30. I'd say those oils should work very well for the application for 20k km OCIs. I'd still change oil filter with every oil change if running 20k kms OCI.

HPL is good for nice long drains. 3 OCI's of 40k kms/year.
