Never did figure out Volkswagen's various TDIs... do even the earliest 1996 models meet the new standards??

There was a Motor Trend article on the creasing on the body panels on this Golf/GTI version. It's the sharpest metal fold to date. Advancements like these attract me to VWs. They're simple, crisp, and clean looking cars that won't get old as fast as much of today's fadly-designed cars (i.e. Hyundai and Focus).

My brother gets just north of 50 in his golf tdi. Around here, diesel is 3.59, while rug is 3.29 and pug is around 3.59. So savings of 50 vs 30-35? Yup.

Plus a great torque curve.

It's not like di ga$$ers don't have hpfp, cataysts, sensors, etc as well.

Ah. So there IS still a market for diesel!

I was almost concerned that they were truly a dying breed. Was not trying to say I wouldn't enjoy a car. Maybe a diesel 3-series. Or, 2006 Mercedes E320 CDI (before the BlueTec nonsense.)

I almost bought a 1996 Passat TDI 5-speed wagon. Still would. Or a Jetta TDI. I could go that way. Not yet, (I'd have to sell something first) but still.. This VW is probably the first VW in a while, aside from the 1999-2006 Golf, that I find really sharp.

I'm sorry, the curves of the VTEC look like [censored]. They really do.

The best looking Civic ever made was this one.

Notice how more square it is.

Now, Golf vs A3:

And, that VTEC.

The Audi looks like the VTEC, and I no longer like it. Though the 4-door A3 is great.

Now, with all that said.. you can truly appreciate how amazing and sharp this VW is.

I must have one. BMW just got crossed off my list, with their ever-bloatier cars past 2007 or so. (3-series has lost its soul. And I'll STILL take an E30 or E36 first.)

Discuss.

And screw Honda.

Nothing of any great value to add here....but to me it's lacking styling. A bit bland and doesn't have any real individuality from a purely aesthetic viewpoint. And I would truly hope that most of them don't come with that bizarre plaid interior.
Performance and handling wise I'm sure it'll be a fun car to drive though.

There's a great side by side comparison to the new Focus ST in this months Car and Driver.

GTI is a super driver, just a bit bland in the styling department.

But I love hatchbacks for their supreme practicality...

I like what I've seen of the new GTI. The styling is fine, and now that they've given it the same (or close to the same) motor/tune that Audi's been using -- with a torque rating closer to its competitive set -- seems a lot more compelling than it was IMO. But I've never driven one.
