Seems like this is based on an Alfa from google. So it is the same MO as the Dart. Pluck Alfa/Fiat from Italia, reengineer/redesign it, slap iconic 'merican name on it and hope it sells.

Frankly I think they should skip the redesign/rename...

I mean we get:

They get:

We will probably never get:

I feel cheated.

Most of the reaction on this and other forums has been negative.

Someone actually started a Facebook petition to save the Cherokee name: http://m.facebook.com/pages/Petition-for...280833&_rdr

I wonder what the focus group results showed? Maybe a two year refresh will occur as with the Compass.

Although I wouldn't get one, I'm not as offended by the styling as others. To me it looks like all the other Hyundai, Kia, Nissan etc. small SUV/Crossovers. For now, I expect the new Cherokee to further stimulate Wrangler Unlimited sales.

I get that Patriot/Compass were failures due to styling and platform in 2010:

But...in 2011 Fiat-Chrysler fixed the exterior problems. They just couldn't fix the underpinnings (Dodge Caliber). The front end on both of these vehicles would look great for the Jeep Cherokee, but I think Chrysler wanted to distance themselves from these two models.

That poor first gen Compass just got hit with the ugly stick all the way around.

Yep, maybe the GM guy that did the Aztek found a job at Chrysler to design the 1st gen Compass.

Why aren't they showing the rear? Is it even more hideous than the front?

Better pic of the front.

I'll bet the back looks like a Buick Rendezvous.

It looks better here but I still ain't crazy about it.

A low for the Auto Show in March, that is for sure.

Here's the deal Fiat/Chrysler.

Nobody is going to buy that because it is a "Cherokee"

It is not a Cherokee. You can call it a Cherokee but no one else is going to accept that. It is a jacked up Giulietta.

You wanna make a Cherokee? Make a Cherokee. Unibody is acceptable but it's gotta be a particularly rugged unibody. It's gotta have real 4 wheel drive and/or RWD. Because of emission standards, you can get away with powering it with the GEMA but you are going to have to graft on two additional cylinders and tune it for some serious torque output.

It was my understanding that Chrysler wasn't ready to unveil this model yet, but after the leaked pictures were posted and all the negative feedback began, they released a couple official pictures that showed in a slightly more photogenic light. Response of the official pictures has still been negative! I am anxious to see the interior since I do like the front and side profile a lot.

I think the "official" pictures make it look even worse...

At least the white one looks kinda rugged. Maybe instead of whipping up some artsy over retouched photos with fake gleem on the grill, they should whip up a hood without the grill, because it is god awful...

X2.

Goodness Chrysler, that is truly horrid. That should not have the Cherokee name on it, and frankly should not be built at all under any nameplate. It's even worse than the current Explorer (which I consider one of Ford's biggest disgraces).

Jacking up flugly cars and putting respectable badges on them is bad enough as it is. This is taking it to the next level though. Who even approved a prototype with that awful front end? [censored] were they thinking? It's like they went out of their way to try to make it ugly.

My parents' awful 1 barrel carb 2.5L '85 XJ is rolling over in its grave right now.

I think if they made the headlight and the parking light/turn signal into one unit, it might actually look normal (probably not good, but at least it won't hurt people's eyes) instead of a mutated front end of a Mustang.

It is butt ugly...I'm seeing a lot of "squinty-eyed" headlight designs with the new LED technology but nothing this extreme. My guess is the negative responses will result in some modifications. I hope they intend something other than the 1.6L multi-air turbo...I drove one in the Dart and it was gutless unless you kept the turbo spooled up (car was OK otherwise).
