Hello-

My 2014 Hyundai 2.0 turbo is approaching 14,000 miles. The dealer gave me free oil changes up to 9,000 miles. At that point I drained what the dealer had in it, and fill it with Delo 400 LE full synthetic 5W-40.

I want to order a kit, and test the oil at 5,000 miles.

I have been reading here now and then, for well over 10 years, but really don't know much about the new GDI turbo cars, and have never actually had oil tested before. So, I'm not sure about when to do it, or which test would be the best for my car. I am concerned, since I've read other Hyundai turbo owners have had failures blamed on poor quality/improper oil, or change intervals causing sludge, so while I think it's a little early to do the test, I just want to be sure I'm not damaging my turbo or engine.

Any advice is appreciated...

Look for fuel dilution issues for your 2014 Hyundai 2.0 turbo engine. You are smart to run a synthetic 40-weight oil in the hot Arizona temperatures. Mobil 1 0W-40 might be considered in the cooler months; it will likely shear a little more than the the oil you're using, but is more than adequate for year-around use.

The GDI engines do better with a 5K OCI, using a 40-weight synthetic for turbos and 30-weight for NA (instead of a 20-weight that gets thinned even more by fuel dilution).

Normally I wait until 20K for a full engine break-in before doing a UOA.

5w40 is enough for COOLER winters and spring.... You are all funny here with that "how low can u go" contest

Could be a little more difficult for Americans to buy good acea a3/b3 a3/b4 synthetics there

The synthetic 5w-40 HDEOs are just fine for this turbo motor; Delo, Mobil 1 TDT, Rotella T6.

Rotella T6 0w-40 or Mobil or Castrol 0w-40 would be fine too.

T6 is on sale at Wal-Mart for $19.xx/gal and there's a $5 rebate on up to two jugs. Stock up!

My suggestion: pick an oil and run it for 5,000 miles. Have Blackstone test it with TBN. Look for fuel dilution and shearing. If it's good, try for 7,500.

I agree that it would be best to do a UOA. I have a Hyundai Veloster with the 1.6 Turbo and Direct Injection. On the Veloster forum where I belong there have been more than a few catastrophic failures with these engines that are presumed to be due to LSPI (Low Speed Pre Ignition). The thinking over there is that shorter change intervals are better in trying to prevent LSPI.

I wouldn't go beyond 5000 miles until you get a UOA that indicates that you are still good at that interval.
