Normally I wouldn't ask and just go down to 15% on the OLM, but we took a vacation that racked up 4000 miles in a week. While the vehicle performed flawlessly, I'm sitting at 6600 mi and the OLM reads 50%. Honda recommends running down to 15% even on the first change. I'm a bit nervous about going down to 15%. I'm not sure where that's going to put me on the odometer. Should I change it out early or let it ride? How stout is the FF in these vehicles?

I bought a 2014 CRV a couple of months ago. my last ride was a 2009 CRV that I purchased new as well. my plan is to change the 2014 at 5,000 miles for the first oci. from there every 5,000 mile oci. did that with my 2009 and it worked fine for me. I do a lot of short trip driving and even more since I moved closer to work. by contrast my brother in law has always gone to the 15% or lower on the OLM on his crv. for me I would change it out early let's see what others say .

Take it to 7500 and then change it regardless. With that much highway travel, the oil is still in good shape.
The filter catches any debris and despite my love for all BITOG-ers, I say go with what the manufacturer says.

Q. Why should I wait to change the oil the first time?

A. Your Honda engine was delivered with an oil that is specially formulated for new engines that have not yet developed their "natural" wear patterns and may contain minute particles from the manufacturing process.

American Honda strongly recommends this special oil be left in the engine long enough for these wear patterns to develop, usually until the first maintenance interval specified in your Owner's Manual, based on your specific driving conditions.

I'd change it now or at 7K.
15% on the OLM could be over 10K and I still like getting the FF out early.
I changed the FF in my Accord at 2K and she never burned oil.
If I bought a new car today I'd probably change the FF at 5K (a compromise between both schools of thought).

I think Honda engineers know what their recomending AND have the data to back up their recomendation. To many of us seem to think we are the real experts when we are not. Ed

Sounds like you are worried that your OLM is not going down fast enough. Really?

Discussions as to when to change FF aside, highway miles are easiest on engine oil, so in your case you SHOULD expect the OLM to go slower....15% as calculated by the manufacturer is 15% no matter what driving you do.

With all that highway mileage you should be fine running it out to 15%. If all of those miles were short trips I would be more apt to change it now, but they aren't so just leave it in.

I really don't understand what the issue is with driving the OLM to 15%?
The reason for the factory fill to be left in has already been mentioned here so no need to repeat.
Just follow what Honda recommends, drive the car and enjoy.

Honda puts assembly fluids in the factory fill that contain high levels of anti-wear additives. Which is why they recommend running the FF so long. However at over 5000 miles you are probably past any critical point these additives ensure. I would go to 7500 and call it good.

^^this x infinity

I don't know why my friends on here are insisting the FF be changed at 5k, 7,5k or less. There is plenty of information that can be found about the FF oil and why Honda recommends NOT changing it out early.

+1

Run the FF until the OLM reads 15% or lower, or a 1 year whichever is less.

After reading a UOA on a 2013 Honda that ran over 10K and still had TBN of 3.9 I'm feeling better about it, even though it was M1 and not FF. This was in Wisconsin in the winter! I appreciate everyone's input. I'm not used to leaving oil in for over 7-8K. Therein lies my discomfort. To me, 10K seems to really stretch it.

I think the automobile manufacturers often have "total cost of ownership" rather than engine durability in mind when they make those recommendations. I still like to get wear in debris out a little early.
On the other hand many on this forum have gone full OCI's on the FF and have had long lasting engines. That's why I've started to split the difference.
An early OCI isn't going to break the bank and it gives me piece of mind.....

The information that I received from someone who worked inside of the Honda engine plant (not for Honda but he was assigned there to monitor and service their testing equipment) was that the FF should be run to the 15% mark as a best case but dumping it at more than 15% would not be detremental. He further qualified that as between 30% and 15%.

On our Odyssey, I chose to go with 5k miles for the FF which ended up being right as it changed to 30%. It's the kid mobile, so lost of city driving thus the short mileage compared to the MM reading. I was planning on staying with 5k mile OCs just because this is the VCM V6, and I don't want to change long intervals and have sludge or any front bank issues with it running hotter than the rear bank. If I was running a Honda 4 cylinder or a non-VCM V6, I'd follow the OLM after the FF was run.

I also had posted a thread in the filter sub forum a while ago with his info on why they state an oil filter can be used for two OCIs.
