Hi All,
Been posting my '11 F150 EcoBoost reports here since purchase...loving the site!

Just bought a 2014 Toyota Camry 4 cyl car for the wife. The dealer says 10,000 mile oil changes (and they pay for the first two as part of their "Toyota care"). With it being brand new, would you recommend me going all the way to 10K for the first change? I was thinking 5k, 10k, and then maybe every 10K after that? What are your opinions? I hope to submit oil reports to Blackstone with this car too but might be tough when the dealer does the change. I use Mobil 1 with the EcoBoost and will use 0W-20 in the Camry from Mobil 1 as well.

Thanks for your thoughts!

(just for fun, this replaces a 2001 civic with 247,000 miles on it that sold for $1400 on craigslist in under 12 hours - over 15 people inquired within that time frame! Had an oil pan gasket leak, dents, scratches, worn out shocks, etc...guess it is still highly sought after!)

Our 2011 camry recommends 1 year/10k oci, that's for the 4 cyl, 6 cyl camry calls for 6 months/5k, the oil change light turns on after 5k regardless of the engine I think. I will follow the 5k schedule on ours, which should be around 1 year the way my wife drives. I used Castrol gold bottle first change 0w20, after that I think I may stick with Toyota Genuine Motor oil for a while.

It depends on her driving. Lots of short trips? If thats the case change ever 5k/6 months, if its all highway change every 10K miles/1 year. Change it at 5K/6 months for the first OC though. TGMO 0w20 is a great oil, I would stick with that.

I would say first one at 5k then take it to the dealer at 10k and 20k get those free ones but I wouldn't wait till 10 for the first one.....that's amazing about that civic but some cars go for big bucks used and that's definitely one of them...have fun with the new camry those look sharp and Toyota is a nice quality.

If you wish to sample the camry you just need a vacuum pump like a mity vac and suck a sample from the dipstick hole. After you sample it drive it in for the free oil change.

If you suck a sample out of the dipstick hole with a vacuum it's gonna be contaminated, jack it up and loosen the drain bolt until it's almost out and pour as much as you need, (with a drain pan under it for spills) and if you spill too much just top off with whatever you have laying around and drive to the dealer.

Sounds great. I will go with a 5,000 change and then get the two free at 10 and 20K. I look forward to hopefully years of dependable reliability with this Camry SE. We'll see what I can do about an oil sample when at the dealer. I think I can finagle my way in to do the deed.

Interesting oil. Where would I find it?

The 2001 Civic is listed as the 5th WORST car on this site...with over 800 A/T problems. Honda has a vastly over rated reputation, IMO. The 2003 Accord is rated WORSE than the 2001 Civic.

For what it is worth, it was a manual transmission.

That's the only way I'd buy a Honda. (with a stick).
It just amazes me that many people won't admit that Honda's aren't perfect. Even JDPowers CR, C&D etc..pretend they are.

Do you have the 1 second clatter at cold soak start up? Very common VVT Controller problem. My 2011 has it. I have heard of newer Camry's with the start up problem. Heard them at start up myself. You might not realize it's happening. Lift your hood and listen for it next time and let us know. I can make mine NOT clatter if I hit the starter a couple times before actually starting.

2011Eco,

With that figure it's obvious there using a good synthetic oil. Since it's a new car I would do what Toyota says and change the oil when they say so. Don't void the warranty unless the dealership will back you. Good chioce o your oil. I use Mobil 1 myself in both my cars 08' Impala SS/2013 Camaro RS.

I haven't noticed it yet?? You mention you can get it to not do it...but what SOLVED the problem for good? Are you just suggesting its a bad problem for the camry?

Just checked the oil for the first time since Wednesday when we got it and it has about 450 miles on it. Oil was about 25% from the full mark. Felt it was strange, but not to be alarmed I guess.

Nothing has solved the problem yet, still have to get Toyota to admit there is a problem. I just don't trust any of the local Toyota dealers to find out and I hear the same start up problem with newer Camrys so you know how Dealers act dumb about common problems? I can't deal with that and will go off on them!
