Took a Kia Rio for a spin today. WOW - that is a nice car. It was the base LX model, 6 speed manual, crank windows, no power locks, but it comes with AC standard. Just the way I like it - less to break. Plenty of pep, the electric power steering felt a bit light, but I am used to that lighter feel from my Astro. Does anyone own this car? It also has Direct Injection. That is a area of concern, since other DI motors have shown fuel dilution issues. It is rated at 30 mpg city, 40 mpg highway. I miss a small car with a stick, maybe this type of car will join the fleet when I can find one used for the right price.
 
The wife and I bought a KIA FORTE today. We were just "window shopping". It will replace our 17 year old MAZDA. It's a nice riding car. It too has standard locks, windows,mirrors, and seats. Less stuff to repair down the road.

Also with a 5 year bumper to bumper, and 10 year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty....

Surprised in a way, they still got standard door locks and crank windows though :P No key fob mess either, OR Chip Keys......hallelujah :P Like my mom's ford....$49.97 for a duplicate.....pfft.

My kia key was 1.88 haha. Biggest complaint I had with it, was the acceleration.....didn't have a lot of pep....but once it was going, it did GREAT

Sadly....I wasn't a member here during the days of that car....so I can't recall if mine was DI, or not....I did have the LX too.


Kinda curious though why such a big "gap" between the city MPG and the hwy MPG.....most others are a couple MPGs off......but the Rio is 10 mpg difference between the 2.....

Likely either due to lies (isnt there a big to-do about elantras not getting their rated 40 MPG?), and/or because of a really economical 6th gear.

Ive been driving/in a 2012 civic recently, and it is easy to swing 40 MPG in...

No lies involved. The MPG Estimates are indirectly arrived at by the amount of C02 emitted during the official EPA emissions test. Its just what is says it is. An ESTIMATE and will vary between individual vehicles, routes and especially drivers. Not to mention the test is run on G100 and most people operate on E10.

In my opinion something about the test procedure tends to over estimate the economy of smaller vehicles and under estimate the economy of larger vehicles.

2007 Hyundai Accent GS
1.6L A4
Ratings: 24/33 28
Actual: 28 mpg (lifetime) / 32 mpg (best)
(Ratings used are the adjusted figures EPA has on its website)

2011 Mustang GT
5.0L M6
Ratings: 17/26 20
Actual: 26 mpg (lifetime) / 31 mpg (best)
(Does not include track days)

2010 Dodge Ram Crew Cab 4x4
4.7L A5
Ratings: 13/18 15
Actual: 19 mpg (lifetime) / 21 mpg (best)
(Does not include tanks of primarily towing or off-road)

That mileage has a lot to do with the driver and the suburban environment I live in but what I want you to notice is the larger the vehicle the better it seems to do relative to the ratings.

I seriously doubt Chrysler underestimated my truck by 4 mpg combined on purpose. They are simply stuck with whatever the EPA emissions test spits out. Whether it accurately reflects real world economy is already known... it doesnt.

I think the problem is the varying speeds in the highway part of the test. The heavier vehicles take more power to change speeds. I think thats what drives numbers down for the heavier vehicles.

I think what raises numbers for the lighter vehicles is the average speed (not peak) of somewhere around 58 mph I believe. While I havnt driven a new Elantra it may very well obtain 40 mpg on G100 at 58 mph in moderate weather.

Did you get a good deal, or are they taking advantage of the high gas prices that are currently with us?

I think I got an OK deal. Especially since it was an impulse buy, with no research done at all. Today I checked Edmunds and found that I payed $700 less than the average for that vehicle in my area.
 
high gas prices..fuel efficient cheaper cars are the way to go. Kia and Hyundai have come along way. If I needed a new car, I wouldn't hesistate looking at their fuel efficient models. I would get alot of hate from my family because they think South Korean vehicles are junk.

MSRP for the Rio LX I drove was $14,610. It had the standard features, a set of floor mats ($95 list), an auto dimming mirror w/compass ($295 list) and a rear bump applique ($65 list). The sales guy was not pushy, I told him I was just starting to look and wanted to drive the 6 speed manual. The dealer did not have any dealer installed options on the car.

10 mpg swing between city and highway is not at all unusual for compact cars.

I've noted the same thing with my Cruze. It's a bit of a guzzler in town since it's using the turbo a lot to accelerate. It does much better on the highway where it doesn't need the turbo as often, and it has excellent aerodynamics for highway traveling. Recall, today's "compact" cars are the same size as the "midsize" cars of 6-7 years ago. They're "compact" in relation to everything else on the road, not by interior space or amenities. "Compact" these days is a misnomer.

I just had a Kia Forte EX for a rental in Memphis. NICE car. I loved driving that thing! I put around 650 miles on it this past week, it drove really nice. It had 4100 miles on it when I got it last Monday, 4-30. I could live with that car......
 
I wouldn't want a car with manual door locks and windows. I cant roll down all the windows on the car on nice days and evenings. It's too much of a PITA. Still, not bad cars.

LOL. I drove many trucks for various summer jobs over the years that had manual locks and windows. And the very first car had flaky electricals so some of the windows didn't go down period. At least a crank is less likely to fail on a 14 year old rustbucket than electrical wiring.

I would pay a premium to NOT get power windows! I am so glad I was able to find a Cherokee with cranks.
 
I don't care what you say I like my conveniences lol. I want to be able to push 4 buttons and all 4 windows go down. I don't want to have to actually use my key to open the door, vs just pressing lock/unlock. Maybe I'm just lazy, but my car has an electrical system dammit I'm gonna use it.
 
The auto HVAC panel in my stepfather's car went out last year. Cost him close to $650 & two days in the shop to fix...it's not serviceable & must be replaced as a unit. My sister's sunroof leaked despite throwing close to $1000 at fixing it. A guy I work with had his car nearly catch fire (with his infant son in the back seat) because of one of the seat heaters! No, I'll pass on electronic whiz-bangs.
