The Ecoboost V6 lights the fires of machine love deep in my chest.

I want an ecoboost crate motor to shoehorn into a Fox body Cougar/T-Bird/Mustang

I'll say it: sweet

I think I would like to own one.

It would be a cool truck to own and hot rod.

And I think they are wrong on the 5.0L numbers in the F150, I'm expecting more like 375/400 to the Mustang's 412/390. I could be wrong though, with TiVCT providing tons of low end they might not need to "detune" it for the trucks.

Actually, it's interesting to me why they would have both the EcoBoost V6 and the Coyote V8 when their hp and torque numbers are the same. I'm guessing that the V6 option is for fuel economy and the V8 has better power and torque curves for towing.

Also, looks like they are considering a EcoBoost 2.5 four later for the small engine.

I still want to figure out how to put the 6.2 or the 5.0 in my Vic.

Based on the SHO torque curves, I'd say it would be hard for a N/A 5.0L to match the mid-range torque.

Until proven otherwise, I'd doubt the durability of a turbocharged gasoline engine in truck use. Diesels are a different animal- sustained high boost is a normal mode of operation fir them. In sporty car applications, turbo gasoline engines rarely run significant boost except for relatively short bursts. Climbing a long grade towing a trailer with an ecoboost v6 is really something I'd worry about.

Like I said... until proven otherwise. The Ecoboost being a DI engine might eliminate a lot of the risks of sustained high boost operation that have plagued previous gasoline engine. I want someone else to be the guinea pig, though

I would think it would be more that the v6 would get worse mileage than the v8 when towing. My neighbor has a volvo with a turbo in it. He says he gets great gas mileage until the turbo spools up. Which is like low 70s on his particular car.

That said it will be interesting to see what mileage it gets rated at. In my experiencing a v6 in a truck usually doesn't increase the mileage rating to much.

Those are some great points. Actually, I had a similar experience with a severely unpowered (3.8 liter carb) V6 Cutlass Supreme coupe ('82 model). With only 105 hp in a big car like that, I had to really wind up the motor to get the car going. The gas mileage dropped so much I would have been better off with a V8. Can't believe that didn't cross my mind when I posted earlier.

the ecoboost costs more to produce, that's why it'll be used in the premium trims. and of course you always have the truck owners that won't settle for anything less than a v8, regardless of whether or not the v6 performs the same job more efficiently

I would imagine that a turbo system designed for speed is going to have different characteristics than one designed for power like in this engine. What those differences are, I don't know.

Man these new engines are sweet. As a GM man though, I'm hoping the general can come up with some new engines that meet or beat these great engines.

well they are slowly moving into turbos also. The new cruze is getting a 1.4 turbo option.

If you're going to tow, you'd want the low end torque provided by the V8. If you're not going to tow you'd want the fuel of the ecoboost.

And if you don't really NEED a truck you'll buy a...

What?

My problem with the whole thing is the fact that the price of even a moderately equipped full size 1/2 ton truck is skyrocketing up, higher and higher each year. Loaded down with every conceivable $y$tem which one may or may not want.

Change the plugs on a Ford V8 for HOW MUCH?

The smaller trucks are getting even wor$e, IMHO.

Cheers!

p.s. How many good used trucks were destroyed by the Ca$h for Clunker$ program?
