I run Napa Gold/Wix filters on all my vehicles, since they seem to be the best and at a somewhat reasonable price. My Frontier's idle is also smoother and the timing chain noise at startup is reduced.

For the first oil change on my truck, Napa gave me a 1356 oil filter. When the time came for the 2nd oil change, they tried to give me me a 1358 oil filter. Not only was it a different number, it looked different. It had smaller holes and didn't have the anti-drain back valve. I tried to show this to the guy behind the counter, but he wasn't listening and told me it was just a different color. I wasn't going to argue with him, since I was obviously a dumb customer, so I went across the street and bought a Mobile 1 filter.

But now it is time to change the oil again, and I am having the same problem. Napa wants to give me a 1358, not a 1356. So, I went onto the Napa website and saw that it shows a 1356 is for a 2009 4.0L Frontier, and a 1358 is for a 2010 4.0L Frontier. The Napa website clearly shows that the 1358 looks different and doesn't have the anti-drain back valve.

So, is there really an oil filter difference between the 2009 and 2010 Frontier 4.0L?? I ran the 1356, supposedly not for a 2010, without any issues for the first oil change. Thoughts?

Here are photo's from the Napa site showing the obvious visual difference:

...So just buy a 1356 and screw what the parts people are telling you. Using a filter with an ADBV on a vehicle that doesn't require it isn't going to hurt anything.

Correct, the ADBV is required on the Nissan 4.0L, thus the reason I will not use the filter Napa keeps trying to sell me.

I have done some more looking into this by comparing what filters are recommended for the 2009 and 2010 4.0L by other oil filter brands.

Mobil 1 - 2009 and 2010, same filter: M1 110
Fram - 2009: 7317, 2010: 6607
Amsoil - 2009 and 2010, same filter: Ea15k13
Mann - 2009 and 2010, same filter: ML1008
K&N - 2009 and 2010, same filter: HP1010
Purolator - 2009 and 2010, same filter: 14610

So, it would appear that Fram, and Napa/Wix have decided the 2010 needs a different oil filter, and one without an ADBV, which is not good. Mobil, Mann, Amsoil, K&N, and Purolator all show the same filter for the 2009 and 2010. I am fairly convinced that Napa/Wix have the wrong part number for the 2010 4.0L.

But, since I am neurotic about this stuff, I am going to call a Nissan dealership and ask them for the part numbers of the 2009 and 2010 4.0L Frontier OEM oil filters.

I used the napa gold 1358 on my 2005 40hp Mercury outboard and i was told it would work for my motor and it did but it was smaller. according to the napa sales person the 1358 was for motor cycles that is why it is different looking.

Did some research last night, and this one has me stumped. Both Wix and Fram list the different filter applications for the 09 and 10 4.0L Nissan Frontier. The Purolator site lists the same, but since the other two list different then I'd go with the former two.

I wonder why no adbv is spec'd for the 10 model year? I'd prefer the 1356 with an adbv, but I suppose if there was no start up rattle to heard it 'may' not be an issue. But the 1358 is shorter too.

I think I would go to the dealer and ask to see the OEM filter or filters application to have something to compare them to. Hard to believe no adbv is a money saving deal but....

So I called a dealership and asked them for the part numbers of a 2009 and 2010 and asked if they were the same filter. The parts guy told me that the filter is the exact same between the 2009 and 2010 Frontier 4.0L, but they did just recently change the part numbers on their filters.

So, perhaps Napa/Wix and Fram picked up that Nissan changed their part number and spec'd a new filter for the 2010.

At any rate, since the 2009 and 2010 filters are the same per the dealership, I am going with a 1356 Napa Gold.

I just noticed that Amsoil changed the Oil Filters for the 2010 and 2011 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec-Vs. 2010 and 2011 are spec'd for the WIX 51358 whilst the 2007-2009s are spec'd for the WIX 51365 and the Amsoil Ea15k12.

This was not the case when I ordered my Royal Purple Filters on eBay.

Nissan has long been noted for specing a shorter filter when there's been no issues using a somewhat longer filter, eg., 14612 instead of 14610. It seems that the trend continues with the 1358 spec instead of the 1356. However, this no adbv in the filter is afaik something new. And in doing some Puro and Fram Xref the 1358 shows up most as a motorcycle filter application.

Shorter filter is one thing, no adbv is something else, imo.

Leave it to Nissan.

Yes, the 1358 does still appear to have have thread end bypass.

I always used the 1356 in my Nissans. 1365 is the what most Nissans call for. It's too small for me.
