So guys, my fiance owns a 2010 Mini Cooper (non turbo)
The mini's warranty covers her oil change, but i have a question.
The last time i went with her to get a oil change was back in last year november. I believe her car had like 15k miles.
And now her car is at 26 or 27k.

Yesterday we went to the dealership, hoping they would change the oil out.
That is a tank of oil well over 1 year. And they refuse to change it and say that their computer says that she still has 2k more miles before the oil change is due.
They only top it off for her.

So i was wondering, whatever oil Mini dealership use, i dont think it could last a year, so what if there is basically no more lubrication in the oil shes running now? And will lead to like engine or whatever failure. Whos going to be responsible for that?

So i want to get a small sample and get it tested and sue the [censored] dealership or something

Well if they just topped it off, that might throw off any analysis numbers.

Ask how much oil they put in to top it off. Was it 1 quart? 2 quarts? 0.25 quarts?

Man i have no idea how much they topped off, the oil was at least a year old.
And those people tell us to come back 2k miles later.
Is like cant u just change the freaking oil? I dont want to come back and deal with you guys again.

I personally change my own oil on my vehicle, but i just dont see the point of changing hers, since shes still under factory covered warranty. And the guy thinks im an idiot or something, questioning me about all the other stuff.
i tell them her coolant is low and he ask how do i know? U look at the freaking reservoir? Theres a min and max line -_-

Gosh talking to those people that work there is like playing the piano to a horse.

A 11,000 - 12,000 miles is not that excessive for synthetic oil and topping it up will refresh the oil certainly enough to put on another 2,000 miles. There's no chance of engine failure, slightly increased wear would be the only argument you could make but you've got no proof.
You could take a sample and have it tested, but it will likely prove to be still serviceable (in light of the top-up).

In future once the oil is changes, knowing the OCM won't likely prompt another oil change for 13-14K miles, you could change it yourself at 6-7K miles.

Isn't mini 15k miles or 1 year? Look at the manual. If it says "or once per year", point at it and make them change it.
They probably used Mini branded 5w30 aka Bmw 5w30 aka Castrol.

All of this over an oil change??? Wow maybe your man-gina needs an oil change. Why not go retain a law firm for $10,000 versus $25 for an oil change.

i could change the oil myself np, its that it has factory warranty.
And my subaru is every 7k miles each oil change at factory.

i just cant understand mini -_-

It's the same for BMW.
If you change the oil yourself it will not void your warranty using a BMW spec' oil, besides how will they know that you changed it or even what oil you've used?

BMW has recently dropped the recommended oil change from 15K to 10K.

I don't know if this covers all R56 models, but myself, I change my oil every 5K miles on my '10 MC.

There is nothing to stop you getting the oil changed halfway through the OCI.

10k, 12k, 15k, 18k and even 20k are relatively common OCI for European cars.

If the Maintenance is included or prepaid then they tend to do as little as possible and run the OCI's as car as is safe.

I am sure some of the Mini came with the flexible service interval that would stretch out the OCI dependant on usage.

Could be wrong, as never had a (BMW) Mini.

I bought my Mini used, but if I remember correctly, on the newer Mini's, the dealer does these once a year oil changes for free. In this situation, just listen to your service advisor. In my experiences with the BMW/Mini store here in Cincinnati, their customer service is TERRIBLE, they will make your life [censored] on purpose, just let it go.

Instead of waiting on the dealer to add oil, do it yourself, check your lady's oil on a regular basis, top it off with Castrol Edge. The last thing you should be doing is waiting for the dealer to add oil when it could possibly be over a quart low.

You could always do a change for her between each of their free ones using whatever oil (probably Mini branded Castrol) they use.
The oil filter would probably be okay until they change it with their oil change, although I'd change it myself.
I'd be less worried about wear than I would about sludge, incidentally.
The various anecdotes one reads and hears about Mini dealer service do not inspire confidence, nor does the fact that this is one of the least reliable new cars you can buy.
They sure are cute, though, as well as fun to drive.

Yea i guess i will start doing these oil changes for her myself.
i do all my stuff on my vehicle, but idk why i never looked at her dipstick.
Since she also bought the extended warranty, i was all relied on the dealer to take care of everything.

Oh and guess what, last time we took the mini to dealership because we saw a dramatic mpg decrease, they said minis are known to have LOTS of carbon build up, and it will cost $300.
So i was like why the [censored] is this [censored] not included in warranty when THEY KNOW their engine creates [censored] load of carbon build up -_-

Does 10k now apply to all bimmers, so change when olm says 5k left?

As far as I know, it only applies to the Mini's.

As to why, my only guess is, it may have to do w/the Carbon buildup on the Intake Valves, due to the Direct Fuel Injection system they use. I know Audi's have the same issue w/the carbon as well. I don't know about the Bimmers.
