Pretty much decided on buying this. My local dealer seems pretty bent on getting rid of these from their lot and the prices impressed me.

XLT 4x4, 4.0L V6, 5-spd manual tranny

Anyone one one or something closely equipped? How's it holding up? Seems like a bloody fast little truck but this is coming from a guy whos driven a Tercel for the last 7 years lol.

Any input welcome.

Have you driven the competition, the current Ranger is nearing being discontinued. A new version is due early next calendar year IIRC

Absolutely love mine. The 4.0 does it make it pretty fast indeed. Very tough, reliable trucks.

I know its being discontinued(EDIT: Redesigned, not discontinued), that's why I checked it out and I'm sure it explains the price. The competition are all much larger (and more expensive) trucks, not a Dodge guy, looked at the GMs, Toyotas, Hondas, Nissan. I don't need a big truck and this is the smallest one out there. On a budget as well but buying NEW for the first time seems like a nice treat and this is the only truck in that range for me. Will haul stuff to the dump, some building materials (small renos, not new construction, no big stacks of drywall or anything like that) as a side thing and commute to work empty most days, and this seems to fit the bill.

More just looking to make sure I'm not making a big mistake reliability-wise, not so much looking to compare. Buying new I want something to last a good 10 years without constant repair hassles. If this doesn't work out I'll be buying used and thats a whole different game.

Whoah, fast replies, missed the last 2 when typing, that was aimed at Hermann.

Thanks all of you, keep em coming anyone who's owned one.

And since this is BITOG, I noticed the truck I looked at, a 2010 model, Said 5w30, not 5w20 on the oil cap. Truck and motor hardly changed since the 90s I know, thats part of the appeal to me. I'm not keen on being one of the quality control testers for Ford's new Ecoboost engines. Not if I have to pay for the vehicle anyways :) I'd think the bugs are worked out of this design by now.

As previously said, they are great little trucks (I'm on my fourth.) Put 165K on one and it still ran great without anything other than regular maintenance. The 4.0 is the engine to get IMO.

If those are your main concerns, then the Ranger is a VERY well sorted out platform.

I've had a few of them over the years and they all served me well. Even if I did treat them like larger trucks and overload and abuse them.

x2 on CR being the WORST....not only that but what "truck guy" is gonna take the time to participate in a CR poll?? It's the Toy and Nissan crowd that go for that junk.

I had a 1990 Ranger with the 2.9L with 270,000 on it. Only reason it retired was flywheel chewed up newly rebuilt trans.
Also had a 1999 Ranger 4.0 (OHV not newer/better SOHC) and put 99,000 on it before I sold it for $4500 last year to buy a Jeep.

I'm currently hunting for a 2002-03 FX4 with twin sticks.

These are trucks that lack any refinement. When doing work, i'm not looking for a smooth ride.

The 3.0 has been discontinued so 4.0 is the only model that will get you 4wd

The 2.3 is a great grocery getter and good for hauling mowers, garbage cans firewood.

Thanks all. That pretty much confirms what I thought and what folks have told me in person. I'm not looking for refinement or cutting edge features or a super smooth soft ride, just something reliable, simple, and capable that I can count on to get me and my stuff around, not get stuck in snowbanks, but still small and quick enough to be a bit of fun.

I'm pretty sure it'll even fit in my small garage.

Assuming I do buy it I'll post my experience when I've driven it for a month or two.

Thanks again guys.

And JD Powers has ranked it as #1 in initial quality and long term dependability.

If reliability is your main concern, you can't do much better than a Ranger. They do have their issues, but they are also easily capable of lasting 20+ years with basic maintenance and maybe a few repairs.

My truck is only 8 years old and only has 90K miles, but I have been beating the [censored] out of it since I got it almost two years ago and it's showing no signs of stopping. From drilling a road sign at over 50 MPH to hauling four wheelers, it has always exceeded my expectations.

Great little trucks for the money. I'm on my second one (both 4 cylinder). I've used them for years without any problems. Overloaded them several times and used them for yard work (soil, gravel, bark, sand, bricks). Drive my current '02 Ranger as my primary commuter vehicle as well as pulling my ATV/trailer on weekend trips. Never failed me. Get's 27mpg hwy. too. Sure, it's no F150....but it was inexpensive and suits it's purpose.
Get one before they ruin it by increasing it's size and weight. It's the only real deal in small pickups....the rest are overpriced.

The 4.0 V-6 is an older 'German' design, and it has always needed a slightly thicker oil than the American engines.

Sounds like a great deal - a proven, reliable design, that is being discounted because of a re-design. The perfect time to buy!

I have an 09' w/ the 2.3. So far, so good. 17,700 miles already, I drive 1,000 miles weekly. It did have a vibration issue when I bought it, but that was worked out.

The 4.0 engine is an old design, but a proven/reliable powertrain.

Please do let us know how you like it after a while.

I had a 1999 just like this. 4x4 4.0L stickshift Great truck but bad on MPG. Best I could get was 19 mpg.It was usually 16-17mpgs.

Well the deed is done. Picking it up this weekend. I'll update once I get a little more time behind the wheel.

Thanks for all the input.
