2009 FX35 Slight valve train and lifter noise

Car was $58K not $35K.

And I don't want to spend $12 a QT for oil because I've seen some UOA reports on the ester oil and it didn't come back too good.

Here's a UOA on Nissan Ester Oil halfway into the change. The EX35 uses the same VQ35HR motor and this car is 50:50 city/highway. Not a leadfoot.

I'd probably run a good 40-weight oil in it (such as Mobil 1 0w-40 if you want to stay with the gasoline specs).

As someone else said - if it's sitting six days a week and you're just starting it and letting it idle it's going to have MASSIVE fuel dilution issues.

Take it on a good highway run once or twice a week and it'll help with that. The valvetrain noise could be attributed to the fuel changing the viscosity of the oil - perhaps bringing it down into the 20-wt range.

Like another poster, I'd say your gasoline smell is coming more from the excessive idling that you do. If you're worried about the battery, get a battery tender. That car should be able to go weeks, shut off, without the battery failing. I would put in GC, stop the idling, and give it a good drive at least once a week.

Thanks guys! I appreciate the help! I'll try the GC like what you said. Maybe switch to 40 weight then. I'll stop letting the car idle like that then. I guess you learn something new everyday. I had no idea that was bad to do.

Thanks, I'll google that to buy one because I need it!

Any idea where to buy German Castrol at? My local Walmart and Autozone only sell the ones made in the U.S.

Autozone, Pep Boys, Advance Auto Parts stock it selectively. I don't think NAPA or Carquest do. O'Reillys might.

I'd check another Autozone, some simply don't carry it for whatever reason.

Notice this guy bashes M1 EP for having lifter noise I guess, then complains of gasoline odor in the oil. Oil delution.

Did the same to my dad's G35 nad my mom's I30. I don't think the regular 5w30 is well suited to the VQ.

Apparently. I'm sure it causes bogeymen in your closet as well as male pattern baldness too

Again VQ series of engines or notoriously loud even when in normal operating condition, when i first got my sentra with the vq35 swap, the noise concerned me but, after talking to my buddies in which build these motors for racing and in general they suggested a heavier viscosity. What does it matter what he payed for the car, its his car and let him what he wants to do with it. The unique valve cut and timing chain design of the vq will cause a ticking noise when cold, it has a tensioner that operates when the motor reaches operating temperatures.

I'm kind of confused on which one is the German Castrol synthetic?

German Castrol (GC) is a 0W30 oil. All you need to do is go into an Autozone or other automotive store, look for the Castrol Syntec bottles that are labelled 0W30, flip the bottle around, and look for the "Made in Germany" in fine print on the back of the bottle.

It looks exactly the same as the other American-made Castrol Syntec bottles, but is distinguished by the 0W30 grade as opposed to 5W30 / 10W30 / 5W50 / 5W40 / etc.

Also, I definitely agree with others here about the idling!!! Terrible for the engine and the oil.

There is no need to be concerned about the battery. I design equipment that is sold to automotive and industrial lead-acid battery manufacturers. My company also engages in a lot of battery testing. We do more in depth tests and autopsies than the manufacturers do! A typical automotive battery in good health should still be able to start the car even after 2 months of sitting unused. I personally recommend using an automatic battery maintainer if you are going to leave the car sitting for more than 2 months at a time. Also, if you get more than 3 - 4 years on your OEM battery, you're in good shape!!!

But in all honesty your car will be fine sitting around for several weeks at a time. I travel a lot for work, and my car sometimes sits for 2 weeks unused. Starts and runs fine, summer or winter. No issues at all with it and its almost 6 years old now. When I'm home, I drive like crazy (65-100 miles minimum per day). My VQ35DE has almost 120,000 miles and still runs very well. I typically run a thick 30 grade syn or a 40 grade syn in mine btw...
