I have a 2008 Accord EX L 4 cylinder. The car is 7 months old and has 7000 km's about 4200 miles. The OLM is at 50%. The manual says not to change oil the first time until the OLM says to. I am going on vacation next week and plan on driving about 2000km's
( 2000 miles ). The driving will be all on interstate highways. My question is should I change oil now or wait until the OLM says to. Thanks

One vote for changing now. Honda's old recomendation was 5K miles, and I changed once right before the trip in the old Accord. It ran so good and got the best MPG the car ever acheived. At 4200+ miles, I think the advantages of leaving it in this long, are probably 90%+ complete. If it was mine, it would get a good brand name 5w-20 dino/blend. Run that to 10K, if the oil nanny agrees. Then I would probably follow the MM and take advantage of the savings using the MM.

I called a few Honda dealerships and asked about the MM and oil changes, I was wondering if I was going to get different answers from different dealers but they were all on the same page and they told me to change the oil at 5000 miles no matter what the MM says. I had inquired about a 2008 Civic.

I'm in the same boat. I'm getting ready to pull the plug (literally) on my GF's 08 Civic. Her car is pushing 6000 with the factory fill and the OLM is still at 30%. I think that once I get synthetic in the engine, then I'll follow the OLM. I feel a bit more comfortable using synthetic with 6-7K intervals.

Is there anything special about the factory-fill oil? Is it special break-in oil? Why do they not say to change it until the OLM says to? Or is it just that it doesn't need to be changed until then?

I would change it now, too. I'm no expert, but I wouldn't trust an oil life monitor. When I was talking with a local AutoZone store employee, he mentioned that he had just gotten a new F-150 truck. We were talking about oil, so I asked if his F-150 had an oil life monitor. He said he didn't know. I said I was kinda surprised the manual didn't mention it. A superior look came across his face, and he said he doesn't read car manuals. Oh, I smiled, I don't know as much about cars as you, so I gotta read the manual [chuckle]

I have a 2006 Accord and changed first time with OLM but that was before I started visiting this website. What oil do you plan on changing to? I have had great luck with Amsoil and have the uoas posted.

Honda has a special break in oil with alot of moly to help with break in, but i changed mine at 4200 and the car doesn't burn any oil so its broken in very nice.
