I drive an 07 Corolla with the 1ZZ-FE engine. I drive a city highway mix. I'm not a sunday driver, but I'm not abusive to the vehicle either. My car has 35k miles and i just changed to 5w30 Pennzoil Platinum with a pure one filter. I was using Valvoline conventional since i bought the car used with 29k miles. The oil cap calls for 5w30, but I've heard that 5w20 is approved by Toyota now. Should i switch to 5w20 Pennzoil Platinum for the next oil change? Or, is there a better option?

I'd just stay with the 5w30 and 5k / 6 mo OCIs until you are out of warranty.

I'm doing 7-8k OCIs with my 2005 Corolla. The UOAs at 5k were very good so I've trying to max the oil with being safe.

Valvoline conventional is a excellent oil. So are most of the oils avail today.

5w30 is all my engine has seen and it is still running like new. 2006 and newer were spec'd for 5w-20 if you want to use it. They increased the capacity of the sump (really they just made the dipstick shorter) but who knows what else they did between 2005 and 2006-on?

Take care, bill

I plan on doing a 2k OCI with the first run of PP because i have no idea of how often the oil was changed for the first 29k miles. Is that a good idea or should i go the full 5k with the PP.

Without question I'd do the FULL 5k OCI unless it takes you more than 6 months to get the miles put on.

2k OCis are for KNOWN problems (head gasket leakers, Serious problem children or doing a quick OCI to find something in a UOA.

Take care, bill

Gonz, just keep using the 5w30 oil, and change it at 5k intervals. When you get out of warranty, you can stretch the OCI longer, but only if you're comfortable doing so. I do 5k OCIs on my wife's 06 Corolla, and I've used several diff oils. Right now it has 5w30 PP and it seems to like it.

Thinner oils, like 5W-20, are designed to increase mileage, as outlined through CAFE.

Bill, why do you say Toyota increased the sump capacity between the 05 and 06 models? AFAIK, they are both 4.5 quarts.

The 05 is 3.9 quarts.

Keep using the 5w30. I meticulously keep track of mileage and there is no advantage regarding fuel economy to using a 20wt in these cars. Your right foot has more to do with it than anything else.

In the unlikely event the PP turns black after ~500 miles, it's possible the prior owner skipped an OC or two, and the car has some goo floating around inside. In that case, shortening the PP OCI makes sense. Otherwise, I'd just go with the manual's recommendation or the maintenance light.

The fuel efficiency benefit of running thinner oils is very minimal - one, maybe two percent. Most drivers can get 20~30% by simply anticipating traffic lights and slowing down a little.

Color does not matter is one of the basic rules here at BITOG.

If there were "something" floating around, the filter is there for a reason.

Plenty of Corollas are on the road with many more miles than 5k on their OCI and they still do hundreds of thousands of miles.

Gee, thanks so much for the lecture re. 'basic rules.'

If your vehicle's oil turns jet black after 500 miles, it's safe to assume the car just might have missed an OC or two, and may have begun to develop sludge deposits.

I think both Pennzoil and Penzoil Platinum in 5W20 and 5w30 are very close. the 5W20 does have some slight advantage in cold start and warm up. I don't see PP in 5W20 much. But since you do some city driving, and I'm going to assume some short trips, it gets cold in VA and your car is certified for 5W20, I don't think it'd be a bad idea to use 5W20 in Winter and switch to 5W30 for the Summer fill. But if I were to pick one year-around I'd probably lean toward the 5W30.

If you compare the specs for 5W20 and 5W30 in bth PYB and PP it's a toss up really. The 5W20 would be slighly favored for cold starts, warm ups and short trips in winter. And slightly the opposite for the 5W30. You could even step up to 10W30 for Summer.

You are welcome...

Well looking at the next sentence we can see you did not LEARN anything...

Thanks okay, a lot of assuming goes on here...

Gonz,

Check your manuel and I'll bet you can. oyota engines are very forgiving when it comes to oil weight. Besides the difference isn't that much anyway cuz during the warm-up it'll reach 20W anyway before hitting 30W.

IF your doing it for more MPG then you won't see from your gas tank indicator even though your MPG will increase very slightly.

The other option is to ask your local dealership about it. My guess is they'll say it's fine. That way technically you won't go out of warranty.

I read this^^^ And I read the responses. My question is: What is the goal or information you seek?

Tell me if I am off track here. Are you thinking about switching to 5w20 for fuel economy? Or to switch to a synthetic from conventional?

Well, you own one, so you should know. The Amsoil lookup guide shows either 4.5 qts or 4.7 qts, depending on the engine, for every Corolla between 04 and 08. That's weird

I used PP 5w30 and i wanted to know if 5w20 would be better since Toyota approves it now.

I have a pre 06 corolla with 1ZZ-FE and it takes 3 qt of oil to the low level and 4 to the full level on dipstick. This is consistent with info in the manual and I don't care what amsoil guide says.

Better for what? MPG, sure. Short trips, sure. Cold winter, sure. Otherwise, no difference.

I think I'll just stick with the 5w30 then.

Ok, I see now. Truthfully I do not believe you will see much change in it with 5w20. From my understanding from this site, PP 5w30 is regarded as closer to 0w30. Such that PP5w30 will be great for you.
