No noticeable difference with the Amsoil ATF. I had switched that out before I messed with the oil to limit 'confounding' variables

Overall I'm happy with the Amsoil after 02 drain/fills. I think it is good that you plan to do a little experiment - go with what works for you and not what I (or anybody else) say!

bar1;

I can't argue with you there. I truly know nothing of whether a 5w30 or 5W-20 would be better for the engine in the long run. What I can tell you is that driving around town in stop and go traffic is smoother and easier on my right foot with the thinner oil in there. Literally to get the car rolling forward with the 5w30 I had to give it a pretty hard rev. With the 5W-20 it's easier to just 'feather' the throttle up to speed. It's just a smoother operation with the 5W-20. It is not in my head.

Makes me seriously wonder if the 'throttle by wire' has been mapped to whatever the specified oil is. In other words, pushing the pedal down a given amount might open the throttle plate less on the cars spec'd for xW-20 and more for the cars sent to Europe where they know that a xW-30 or xW-40 weight oil will be used.

Buster;

I love the Civic. I was starting to become disappointed with its performance while running the 5w30, but now with the 5W-20 back in it is smooth as can be, takes off like a rocket, great handling etc. If I don't look back at the rear doors or baby seat I can at times feel very sporty

I really like the 17-inch wheels and I have never been much of a wheel guy.

Edit: The 5w30 didn't affect the handling, LOL!

My wife has a CR-V with the same engine/trans as your Accord. They really hit the jackpot there IMO. Can't even imagine getting a V6 given how good that Four is.

2005 4cyld Accord using M1 0w-20. Smooth as silk.

Nice car. How do you like it?

I have about 600 miles on my new Civic EX sedan. I would love to hear an update on your experience. I plan on running to factory fill to about 3K - 4K, and then use up some Valvoline 5w20 I have in the garage from my last civic. Around 10K, I plan on going synthetic, and following the OLM.

How did the Penzoil synthetic work out last interval?

Matt89,
(I have a 2001 Civic LX)

I recently switched out my Amsoil 0w30, which I had been running for nearly 55k (changes every 15k), to M1 0w20. I agree that it feels more free to accelerate with the thinner oil and my mileage has improved dramatically on the highway.
I also have a 2005 CR-V and love it as well. Just put M1 5w20 in it as well after 4100 on factory fill and 5k on Amsoil 0w30. Don't really notice a huge difference in performance but I think that's a symptom of the amount of power that engine has vs. the very small amount of power my Civic has. I'll watch the fuel mileage though.

Sorry guys, I've been 'in transit' the last few weeks.

I didn't run the Pennzoil syn, just the regular yellow bottle. I have Motorcraft 5W-20 in there now, and will be going to M1 next time around in a 5W-20 (haven't seen the 0W-20 here).

Chris, with two Hondas in your driveway do you get a lot of "So...you really like Hondas" from people? I seem to. If I had 2 Chevies or Fords I bet no one would say a word.

You know, I think about people thinking it more than people actually saying it. All I know is they're historically pretty much trouble-free and long-lived and that's what I'm banking on for both my current cars. You have to respect a company that only makes enough product that they know they can sell, and do it well for decades. It's one of the unfortunate problems of the Big 3 these days.....too many cars and dealerships with the expectations of days gone by not meeting today's sales needs. Plus quality is not quite what it used to be. (I grew up on Chevy's so don't beat me up! Reliable as the tides they were.)
