2005 Accord 2.4L - Oil Recommendation Wanted

Hey Everyone,

I have lurked here for a while, and learned a ton from these forums. Finally have a question worth posting!

I recently bought a 2005 Accord for cheap basically sight unseen. I have drove the car about 1000 miles now. In that time, the car has used about 1.5 qts of oil. I have refilled it with Pennzoil conventional 5w-20 (just what was available when I found out it was low). I pulled the plugs today, and the #4 cylinder is horribly fouled compared to the other three. It looks like the plugs were replaced right before I bought it, I'm assuming to get it running enough to sell. I'm guessing the rings on #4 aren't sealing well. Car runs great, other than being noisy when cold.

I typically run Supertech full synthetic in all of my other cars. My thinking is to get an oil analysis done on what's currently in there, and change the oil to the Supertech High Mileage in 5w-30 to see if I can help the rings in #4 to function again. Any feedback on trying a heavier weight oil? Anything that might work better? I'm willing to try about anything. It's not urgent that this gets fixed, nor is it critical that this car even stays running for us.

This is a perfect candidate for Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W-30 with your oil consumption problems. Run at least 4 full oci’s. Personally I’d run it indefinitely in this vehicle.
This is the way to go. VRP in 5w-30 and don't look back until the cut filters are spotless. My VRP experience in my 200k mile Odyssey was quite impressive.

If you aren't ready to change it to VRP, get some HPL engine cleaner on order and start topping off with that instead of regular oil.

Like others have said above- I think VRP is the way to go. I’ve got some lined up for our newly acquired ‘12 CRV. How many miles were on the Accord when you bought it?

Seems to be a popular recommendation. I will pick some up, and report back with what it does or doesn't do for me.
With that much burning, and you already reading, I might suggest a Berryman piston soak, new PCV, new plug(s) and then the Valvoline Restore and Protect. Filter change at about 2k and cut it open to check. How does it look through fill port?
Looks tarnished, but not overly so. I don't see any deposits or anything, but I'm not super familiar with a K24 and how much you can see. It's not any worse than most other engines I've looked at with 215k. Cam lobes don't look overly worn.

About 212k. I am at 213,500 now.

IMO.... 1. Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w30; (3x to 5x); afterwards

2. Any full synthetic xw30 on sale, often.

Source: owned a '04, 4-cyl. Accord from mile 3 to 189,000 miles. Stupidly sold it to make room, when I should have been a card hoarder and kept it, lmao.

PS, tap the unlock button on the fob once, then twice and hold ==== open the car windows.

Lots of other hacks, tips, repair hints, etc on the major honda forums. And don't use the physical key---use the fob---the teeth inside the lock cylinder wear easily

Well we must first WELCOME you to the BITOG site. You are going to like it.
Sounds like you did just like myself and quite a few others who have said they started out the same way. Lurking , learning , liking then a member! (y) There are many very nice people here who are very willing to share. Looking at the thread , you are getting some good advice already. Good luck with it. Glad you have the ability to take your time to sort out what is going to happen and decide what to do about it.

Not always.
When I see this question, my first thought is to classify the car as one with a problem caused by contamination, like sticking pistons rings, varnishy insides, clogged PCV valves or oil misadventures like super cheap oils or terribly long OCI’s.

Those situations can all be addressed with differing likelihoods of success with minor repairs, treatments, new oils, rapid LOF cycles.

The other group are the 400,000 mile sleds that are simply worn out. In those cases, you go with thick oils, goopy additives and hope for whatever the car has left in it.

One nice thing about this vehicle is the presence of perhaps the most durable, well designed engine in history.

Those reasons are why always like the owner’s quick assessment of the car.

Had an Element that had stuck rings. Try a piston soak with Berryman's B12 Chemtool and then Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w30. I run 5w30, 10w30, 0w40 and 5w40 in my K24 just fine.

With this kind of excessive oil consumption, sooner or later the catalytic converter will be clogged and the engine will lose power. I would definitely run Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W30 for the life of the engine.

Our '05 CRV with the K24 was badly neglected when we got it at 210k miles.

Watch out for a bad spool valve, which may cause it to cut out at or above 2700 rpm. We tried short changes and various flushes & cleaners in ours which would work for a few hundred miles - ended up replacing spool valve and it's been good since.

[agree with V R&P]

This ^. Plus replace the PCV & the breather hose it attaches to.

I just resolved a horrendous oil burning problem in my neighbors 03 CR-V. I was burning 1 quart in 300 miles. Twice as bad as your oil burning.

I switched it from 5w20 Maxlife to 5w30 Maxlife. The change to 5w30 slowed the oil consumption to 1/3 quart in 300 miles.

Then I replaced the PCV and the breather hose that attaches to the PCV. The old PCV was dirty, but still partly functional. The old breather hose was shrunken and collapsed at one of it's angle bends. The collapsed breather hose was the main problem.

With a new breather hose and new PCV the oil consumption stopped completely. I will continue using 5w30.

However, if I had a do over, I'd have put 5w30 Valvoline Restore and Protect in it because that would have the added benefit of cleaning pistons, rings, valves. All of which would benefit from some cleaning after the prior oil burning.

During your first use of Restore and Protect, change the oil filter early. Like around 1000 miles. At 5000 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first, change the oil and filter. Thereafter, change R&P oil and filter at 5000 miles or 1 year.

Also, I recall reading somewhere that CR-V (with high mileage) are prone to camshaft failure. For this reason (and other reasons) you should use a full synthetic oil in a CR-V.

After you use 5w30 R&P for 4 oil change intervals, I suggest then using either of these oils:

5w30 Quaker State High Mileage Full Synthetic
5w30 Valvoline Maxlife Full Synthetic
