2005 Accord 2.4L - consuming more oil

I've heard from other Honda techs that it's common for the K24 to consume oil once it gets older, especially if it has been driven hard.

Buster car is driven very, very hard. I'm honestly surprised that it does not consume more oil than it already does.

While the oil level may have been full when you finished your oil change, did you fill the oil filter or put it on dry?

I just changed the oil on my Civic and noticed that after driving it was down a bit, not much but enough is kept in the oil filter that I was able to notice it on the dipstick.

Curious as to why you are running 5w30 & 10w30? Oil consumption the same when using the specified 5w20?

You mentioned Terry a few posts back ... I know from experience with him and with this exact engine that he prefers only 5w20 used in it. I recall even questioning him on it while he was going over a UOA with me .... so I stayed w/ 5w20 on this motor after that.

driven very very hard?????
I do not think so.
I'm not sitting next to him while he is driving, but I have the exact same car-at 80mph it is cruising along at about 2700 rpm-Mine has been from NJ to FL and back----all straight shots only stopping for food and gas----- at least 10 times in the last 3 years.
17-18 hours of sheer joy. Once we hit southern Virginia on the way down, the speedo never sees the bottom side of 80 for the rest of thee trip.
I do not consider this hard use either, the car redlines at what, 6500 prm?
consumes no oil BTW
Steve

A side note: In my exact same engine, it calls for 4.5 quarts. However, after two changes and putting that much in, I was down exactly 1/2 quart both times. So now, I put a full 5 quarts into it and it always reads right smack on the full mark on the stick.
It doesn't burn anything, really. 1/6 quart over 10k.

It isn't a big deal to cruse at 80 mph all day. On the other hand, gunning it at every stoplight, and redlining the car at every freeway entrance is a different story. Also, buster has a manual, so his engine does see the "upper RPM range" much more often.

Not for the engine, but for the driver, if he/she happens to be in Virginia and happens to get pulled for for speeding, it's charged as reckless driving.

I think a LOT of CR-V owners have noticed that as well. I pretty much never add 4.5 qts.

I have used 5w20's for the majority of the cars life. I have also tried M1 5w30/10w30 at times. Oil consumption has always been about the same with all oils.

I am tempted to try something else if the M1 EP 5w20 consumes anymore. It could have been that I didn't put enough oil in the first time, but i doubt it.

My car most likely consumes oil because it was not broken in correctly. It wasn't given enough WOT from the start.

Oil consumption can also be part of an engine's design. The Critic is correct in that there are quite a few K series engines that do consume oil. Some don't consume any oil.

At 80 mph my rpm's are @ 3,100. I don't go above 80 mph in most cases. 80 mph is the flow of traffic on most highways.

I tried to vary my throttle as much as possible and do some good WOT runs. However, I was making an even longer daily commute at the time than I do now. So there was a lot of cruising.

What about Redline?

Also, I'd just add I know that mine was consuming oil from the beginning b/c the first time I ever took my V to the dealer was to inquire if it was normal to have such a giant oily spot on the air filter where the PCV opening was.

It's weird that the EP is being used up. You saw my Blackstone report, I only used 1/6 of a quart over the 10k.
Perhaps you're right about the WOT from the beginning.....my wife LOVES to do that straight from the garage up the street every day!

Mine when I had it took a full 5 qts. I think this is because I used ramps to change oil, which causes more oil to drain out. My 2¢

My takes 5q, even though I try to fill it with a lil less. I drain pretty good with a dry-crank too.

I switched a 02 CRV to PP at about 50,000 miles and it consumed 1/2 qt in 5000 for 2 OCI's then stopped consuming. Not sure why but it did. And mine was always full on the dipstick with 4.5qts. FWIW the 5w20 PP ran well in that engine before some jerk totalled it.
