I own a 2004 Toyota Tacoma 2.4L with 85K and drive approx. 7.5K per year.
Have used Amsoil Signatuure Series 5W30 and would like to try something more readily available.
I run GC 0W40 in my Audi A4. I like to European rating systems.
Oils under consideration:
Mobil1 EP 5W30
GC 5W30
Liqui Moly 2249 Leichtlauf Special LL 5w30

Inputs are appreciated!

Thanks!

Why not go to one oil for the home fleet? I am considering this in my upcoming Toyota oil change and that doesn't mean I am going to a ilsac oil for the BMW.

Amsoil Signatuure Series 5W30 it's a good choice for that engine.
Other available option: Valvoline Maxlife 5w30

Why you think the need for Amsoil SS in this app nothing against it just curious M1EP 5w30 will do just fine and able to grab off any Walmart shelf.

Did you read his first post? He is moving away from Amsoil.

Stupid short time restriction on edits....

Stoicb7, agree with one oil for the fleet, keeps it simple. In your place I'd take the EP. Not a Castrol fan and don't know anything about the third oil you mentioned. Dave123 is right, it's very readily available.

Sure did just wonder why he ever thought he needed to run SS in the first place.

Boutique oil is not needed in a non-VVT engine. If you're towing or otherwise working the 4 cyl hard, Mobil 1 is up to it.

That's what I am talking about.

LOL what a recommendation. You could use a boutique full synthetic with limited available and astronomical price for your economy pickup .....or a semi synth with decent properties that's $15 bucks for a jug as another option.

Honestly your truck doesn't really care in that motor. If you like running full synthetic in it, i'd just run whatever you are using in your Audi for ease and it'll never know the difference.

My recommendation has made for '04 Tacoma. stoicb7 already runs with FS oil.

You could use any 5w30 synthetic on the shelf at Walmart and do a yearly drain.
There's no need for M1 EP and the Castrol 0W-40 would bring additional fuel consumption, since it'll have significantly higher HTHS than an ILSAC 5w30.
There was never a need for Amsoil SSO in this application unless you were running a lot of miles and were looking to extend drain intervals.

Thanks everyone!

I started using Amsoil Signature Series 5W30 in my Tacoma 2.4 years ago after a walk-in encounter with my local Amsoil dealer/distributor in San Carlos, California that had a store front location. I was not trusting the mass marketed synthetic oils because they often turned out to not be true synthetics.

I have been happy so far running the GC 0W40 in my Audi A4. I noted significant less oil consumption than the Castrol Professional OE 5W40 used by the dealers, there was less soot in the tailpipe and hopefully less deposits in the intake tract considering the history of DI engines.

Narrowing choices between M1 EP 5W30 and the GC 5W30. I have not yet researched the differences in viscosity between GC 5w30 and GC 0W40.

Thanks!

A 12 year old motor and you live in Kalifornia ... I'd just run Rotella T6 year round and not worry about it. It's thin for a 40 at op temp. The 5W is thin enough to get the juices flowing at start-up. It's easily available and it's inexpensive - done

I've been running Toyota pickups 4x4 since the late 70's. Most have been very easy on oil. Since 2006 have 4Runner V8... one of the easiest engines on oil to date.

When got off extended warranty, have been running 5w30 Mobil EP. 7,000 to 10,000 miles a year. Change the oil 1x per year. Oil is fine and 4Runner performs like a champ.

The EP is only a few bucks more per 7qt oil change than the PP I was using while under warranty. EP is quite frankly one of the finest oils I've ever used. And... you can buy it anywhere.

YMMV. Enjoy your truck!

There is no such thing as GC 5W30.
There was GC 0W30. Production of that oil is moved to Belgium, and 0W40 production was moved from Belgium to Germany. So 0W30 now is made in Belgium, or BC if you want.
Castrol's 5W30 ILSAC and ACEA C3 are Made in USA.

Here is a repost of a conversation I had with a 92 Tacoma owner. Seems to show the Tacoma will run long and well on just about anything:

I have a 98 Toyota Tacoma with 206 K miles. My truck has always run Amsoil 5w30 and a factory filter. The oil is changed once a year and the filter twice yearly. I recently ran into a contractor with a 92 Tacoma with 268 K miles on it. The man's truck showed minor dents and scratches but was purring like a kitten. The engine had never been apart. Being a BITOGER, I had to ask the man what oil he ran to get that longevity. The man gave me a puzzled look and said any oil of the correct weight :-)

I will probably continue with the Amsoil in my truck, but, it looks like the Toyota four cylinder will last darn near forever with any oil, dino or synthetic. I love the fact I can get Mobil 1 cheap at Walmart.

FYI

Never heard of a 92 Tacoma. They were never made that early. I had a 93 Toyota Extra Cab 4x4 Pickup.

They were called PICKUPS back then.
