I'm looking at an '03 Dakota with the 4.7 litre Mercedes V8. The spec on that engine is 5w30, I was wondering if it would be beneficial to use a HD 0w30 such as Delo Synthetic? Location is central Alabama, summer climate is typically low 90's to just over a hundred. Winter climate can be anything from almost in the negatives to the seventies. I'm thinking the Delo would be great, as I plan on doing some towing. I'd plan on 7,500 mile OCI's

There is never going to be any need for a 0w oil in Alabama. Stick with a good 5w30 synthetic like PP. Also, are you certain that is a Mercedes V8?

I'd run t5 10w30 in it.

Thats good to 0f easily.

I doubt you see much of that in alabama.

I think your idea is great.
It's an hdeo which means it'll stand up to some hard working,it's a 0w so it's more than adequate in whatever temps you call winter and there's no need for any fine tuning for the changing seasons.
I say go for it

That's a Chrysler engine introduced in '99 I believe. All it needs is a good 5w30, in your climate a 10w30 would be just fine too. There is no reason NOT to use the Delo 0w30 though, any good 30 grade should work well in that engine.

Where are you finding Delo 0w30? I thought that was like a Canada thing.

I'm not sure if it's available in my area or not. The 4.7 is a Chrysler engine, But I do believe it's based off of the Mercedes V8, as Chrysler was owned by Merc at that time. I may be wrong, either way I've also thought of using Motorcraft SB 5w30 or Qs Defy 10w30.

No mechanical harm using the 0w30 year round; I've had several vehicles that 5w30 or even 10w30 was specified, and used 0w30 with great UOAs. And if you get it at less cost, so much the better.

You hadn't mentioned Defy before. Either the 5w30 or 10w30 should be great in that engine, Defy is one of my favorite oils, great stuff!

Do you think it would be alright to run a xw-40 oil? As far as HDEO's are concerned, I know 5W-40's are available in my area. The only reason I mentioned Defy in a 10w30 is because I have over thirty quarts of it. I want to take care of this truck; it's the first nice one I've owned. I want to run either a full syn or a syn blend. Only thing I haven't decided on for sure is a filter.....

If you already have 30 Qts of Defy, that's what you should use. Worry about what to buy after you run out.

A 40 weight won't be necessary unless your towing pushes your temperatures high but it probably won't hurt either. I would use the defy first also unless you have other plans for it. The 10w30 should do well in your year round climate, albeit not optimal for winter.

The only 40 weight I would run is Mobil 1 0W40 because it's a high vi oil and isn't extremely thick at temperature like some 5w40/15w40. Mobil 1 0W40 has a published viscosity of 13.5 cSt @ 100ºC while a 5w30 synthetic typically falls between 9.3-12.5 cSt @100ºC.

I'm honestly quite surprised that my 10w30 has gotten such approval. I figured the 0w30 would have been the overwhelming winner. Guess I'll keep running that good ol' QS.
