2002 Volvo S60 ATF change

The OM says Dex III IIRC. I asked the question here last year and it was indeed CHF-11s. I've been using it in her car issue free ever since.
 
Here is a photo as promised. What a day it turned out to be.. I crawled under her car to remove the lower splash pan and noticed her passenger brake hose bulging in 2 different spots. They were Volvo parts and installed about 1.5 years ago. We ended up having to drive across town to the closest AAP that had a hose then down the road to Harbor Freight for some brake line wrenches since I didn't have mine with me. Didnt officially finish both jobs until 8:30.

My funnel idea worked (and it was cheap), but it took about 5 minutes for 1 quart to drain into the transmission. Note the string tied to the dipstick. It was difficult for me to reach into a hot engine with 2 hands: one to pull the tab back and one to pull the stick up.. So one finger to pull the tab back and a gentle tug to pull the dipstick up meant little to no burns. I just tied the other end to the air box plumbing.

All in all, we are both very impressed. It shifted much smoother and even she noticed it a difference. I am glad I bought 14 quarts because I ended up using around 13. After disconnecting the lower cooler line, a lot of fluid ended up running out of the radiator and into my catch pan. Plus the additional fluid left in the lengthy probably lead to needing 12+ quarts. I ended up using the IPD flush kit. In the reviews, a few said to attach the hose to the upper cooler line at the radiator, but that would have required a different sized hose. Next time, I think I will use that method since its cleaner and easier to get to.

The description and picture didn't show this is full synthetic ATF, but the words "Full Synthetic" is printed on the bottle label.

Excellent! BITOG to the rescue...

That OM misprint has caused the death of many Volvo PS systems. And the rack requires sub frame removal to be replaced...

No, no, no! CHF-11s (or CHF-202) only in a Volvo system!
 
As above...use the modern CHF-11S. Volvo was very slow in updating their owner's manuals.

In fact, my first V70 was in part put up for sale because someone put red transmission fluid into the power steering system. The system growled and a flush with CHF-11S bought me 40,000 miles.

Then the pump suddenly began growling very loudly during a 50 mile highway run. A junkyard pump (which dripped green CHF-11S) got me going again. It's only the new synthetic stuff for me.

Also, regarding this thread, it's funny no one has mentioned adding a transmission cooler. Not that it's a guaranteed fix but it does address the "thick-thin" paradigm directly and affordably.
 
Kira - I mentioned the cooler (and filter) on page 1 of this thread. Even linked pictures of the set up on my 2002 V70, which includes a thermostat, cooler, and spin-on filter. It all fits under the bumper cover. The spin on filter hides under a panel that is removed with one screw and the filter is changed very easily. The thermostat insures that the fluid will stay at reasonable temperatures on cold mornings, particularly in Colorado, where the car is currently parked. The XC-70 has the same cooler (B&M 70264 stacked plate, 1.5" thick) but since it stays in Vriginia Beach, I didn't add the thermostat, or the spin-on filter, it has a Magnefine in the return line. Also, both my Volvos came from the factory with a magnetic drain plug in the transmission. A nice touch.
 
Pardon my ignorance, but I do not understand the need of an auxiliary cooler in this situation. We dont use it to haul a trailer, Indiana is rather flat etc.

A Magnafine filter on the return line is worth a consideration though. With her S60, the return line is on top so it should be pretty easy to get to.

Astro, was it you who used the PEX tubing cutter on the line and accommodating fittings to attach the filter?
 
Also, as I think about it, I believe it was Kira who pointed me in using CHF-11s in her car. She's saved me quite a bit of money over the last year. Lol.
 
$4 per qt on the Toyota fluid was a great deal. It was $5.60 at my nearest dealer. I'm going to do a drain and fill soon but looking for a funnel with a thin tip to get into the dipstick tube. Where did you get the one in the pic?
 
I made it with a small cooking funnel and 3' of clear hose. $2 investment.

I can get the outer diameter of the hose if you'd want.
 
That would be great...especially if it fit in nice a snug in the dipstick tube. I would think if it were loose it would back up and run down the side.

I have a 2005-- is it the same - the return line up top?

Should be according to the IPD kit's instructions.

I would just use that method. It'll be less mess and easier to get to. You would just need a larger hose that can go over the radiator fitting.
