I shoud add that in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania there are many hills. It almost seams that if you are not going up a hill, you are going down one. Transmission life (and tire and brake life) probably is less because of all of the hills around here.

If you lived in an all flat area you would probably get more miles from a transmission.

Just to give you a idea of the "conditions" the OP is driving in. If you factor in the heat you can see how this area can stress transmissions. This is some of the most beautiful scenery IMHO in Southern California.

It certainly is beautiful but I would also like to acknowledge the neighboring city of Moorpark CA and all other Ventura County Cities. Worked in Moorpark for many years. Truly a farm/rural/country like town.

"Moorpark was one of the first cities to run off nuclear power in the entire world, and the first in the United States."

I will update the transmission situation soon

My truck just turned 100k and the transmission is doing fine. I have the fluid changed every 30k-40k miles.

187k is a pretty good life.

BTW you can order that transmission right from GM for $1,600 with a 3 year unlimited mileage warranty last I checked. When/if mine goes that's what I'm doing. Rebuilds by locals can be hit and miss. I have seen some excellent ones, and some that failed after only 18 months. Warranty is usually a year.

I have the same truck, bought new in April of 02. Always drained and refilled every 30k miles. At 90k sun shell in the transmission stripped. Common problem in this year truck. Make sure if you rebuild they upgrade this.

I agree with rebuild being hit or miss. Mine was Done by reputable shop but shift kit installed is way too firm for my likings although I know it is better for transmission.

Beats mine. My A/T broke at 48k miles and required a GM reman. unit as its replacement. My extended warranty company picked up the tab, somewhere around $3,000.

Update on my transmission. It was rebuilt...3 year 36,000 mile warranty. 2 days later Motor Head garage advertised Rydell and they sell remanufactured transmissions 3 year
100,000 mile warranty 1,600 dollars. I know a guy who installs transmissions for 350.00 dollars. Thats what happens when you are rushed. It's the family transportation vehicle and wife wanted it done "yesterday".

OUCH. We have a local guy who will do those trans for about 1600 bucks with upgraded parts and a lifetime warranty if you just let him see it every 30k miles.

God willing, all the parts he charged you for are actually in the transmission.

As you have discovered, it is better just to buy a whole transmission sometimes, than to have a unit rebuilt. I have only had an automatic transmission rebuilt twice, and both times I received temporary results. Both times, I was also charged for parts that never went into my transmission.

Learning lesson for me. Guarantee it will not happen to me, a friend or a relative. If this transmission goes out on me after the warranty period I will not hesitate to buy a remanufactured transmission...check this out...its on sale

Ah, don't feel bad. We've all been stuck somewhere, or are waiting to be.

Now it won't happen again!

Besides, if your guy did the job right you may never have to worry about it again. Ever.

2000 silverado 4.8; at 300,000 miles the transmission stopped working; i had done a flush every 20/30,000 miles but never dropped the pan and change the filter; it was my guess that the problem was something like the sticky valves issue mentioned in the original post; i traded the truck in and never found out; maybe put some solvent or mystery oil in there to clean the lines and possibly avoid an expensive repair.
