I am highly uncomfortable that the Prestone I have trusted for 40 years is now owned by the same company as worst oil filter. Should I just buy Super Tech everything and hope for the best?

Yes. With ST, at least you know it's walmart's buying power and pressure making the product cheap and not the cheap filter making you spending advertising dollars to make more cheap product

My experiences with Fram oil filters began in 1975 when I got my Rabbit. They had the filter required easily available and locally. Back then you didn't have the "big box" auto stores and the VW dealer was not near by. The filters mounted almost vertically, facing down. I don't recall any dry start sounds from oil draining from the filter and no known problems. Also used them on my 1977 & 1985 Rabbit & Golf with no noticable problems. I was changing the oil within 3,000 miles.

In 1980 I got a new Ford F-100 with the 300 inline 6 that mounts the oil filter horizontally. I continued to use Fram's I began to notice cold start up noises, especially in the colder temps. I bought a new 1989 F-150 with the same engine and continued to use Fram's, even though the local auto parts store also carried Motorcraft oil filters for less, "the power of advertising". Several of the Fram filters during this time period almost blew off by expanding. I had many new filters with loose no or base gaskets.

I finally went to the "cheaper" FL1A Motorcraft oil filters and all my problems went away. Motorcraft oil filters are obviously better filters than the Orange can from Fram. For my Ford vehicles Motorcraft performs better than Fram at at a lower price.

Not surprising to see rust on a 20 year old piece of bare metal - untreated for any corrosion protection ... even if it was inside and in that box all the time. There is always some level of moisture (humidity) in the air. In fact, keeping it in a cardboard box that can also absorb moisture from the air probably made it rust more than if it was sitting atop your fireplace mantel outside the box.

Bill, thanks for the post! Did you notice anything about the filter that showed it starting to deteriate from age? Was the glue still holding? Bet the rubber ADV was getting brittle.

Define fail... If you get startup noise every time you use a certain filter and when you use others it is not heard or when you cut one filter open and it constantly looks bad or worse than other brands no matter which brand we are talking about the one that you hear startup noise and the one you cut open and see sloppy workmanship failed to some degree...
