You probably can't go wrong with either the K&N or a P1. Particle counts for the P1 are quite impressive though, and half the price of a K&N to boot. Theres my 2 cents for the day. Well, maybe not two cents because the P1 saves me approx 5 bucks compared to the K&N. Ill be that in just a moment a Supertech guy is going post comments that save another two and a half bucks more than that. Ha Ha

You will have to excuse my lame humor. I am in such a good mood today because outside temps here in AZ are now below 100. Its even in the 70s and 80s in the morning. Yahoo boys, fire up the bikes, its ridin time.

Have a good one.

The oil pressure gauge definitely reads higher now too. It's almost as quick as the tachometer now!

Update: I'm 2500 miles into this OCI and I'm concerned about a little piston slap/knock noise on cold start-up developing during the last week. I haven't heard this noise since the truck was new and I was using dino SJ motor oil with OEM Toyota filters.

Would more oil pressure = less flow and subsequently = start-up noise?

This issue baffles me. I think something went wrong in the filter, possibly. Since changing the filter (PureOne) and reloading with a clean change of Schaeffer's #703, there has been no start-up noise. I don't think the oil would have degraded enough after only 2500 miles to cause the noise, but we'll see. Life is good again.

But what I perceive to be happening at various random scans of the pressure gauge seems notable, nonetheless.

..and they are probably valid. I'm not saying that you're FOS. No.

The only reason I go to such lengths to assert such things is to resist the creation of sortatrueisms. If you see this (and you do) ..then therefore everyone must seek out more "flow" from something that can't (again, typically) offer you any. So, now Charley Joe-Bob will avoid XYZ filter and opt for only one kind because he's kept awake at night otherwise. You're on the internet here ..and you don't know how many people are going to read it and turn it into gospel in all cases under all circumstances.

Now there are engines that have oddities in oil pump and pressure regulation that evidence pressure changes with different filters. The Titan V8 appears to have an interesting configuration that can play with your indicated pressure (cold) depending on the filter. In it's case it's the location and limitations of the relief ..and the location of the sendor. I haven't got all the principles locked down enough to intelligently explain them, but the relief isn't "conventional" in that the pump is capable of providing flat oil pressure over a very broad range when cold or hot in all but the upper rpm ranges. Certain filters appear to alter this and produce higher pressure when cold.

So, in short, if you see pressure alterations (or experience odd noises with an idiot light) with the use of one filter over other selections, then you're correct in the notion that the filter is restricting something ..but that's not why you're seeing/hearing it. If a filter "fixes" it ...great.

Update: After about 3500 miles since changing back to the PureOne 10241 oil filter and filling with a fresh batch of Schaeffer's #703, there has been no more piston slap on cold starts...even on a recent trip to South Dakota where morning temps were in the 20'sF. I like the Schaeffers engine oil and hope my next UOA reflects a decrease in wear metals over PP and ML syn that I've used in the past.

I just switched all three of my older cars to K&N Gold oil filters. No oil pressure gauge on my cars but what I have noticed is that when I start any of the three, the oil pressure light goes off much quicker than with other oil filters I have used. Amsoil EaO, NAPA Gold, Denso. Two cars are using 0w20 and the other is using 5w40. The bolt on the end of the K&N is nice on my 93 Infinity G20 since it's a tight fit. I will admit that I wish they were cheaper. Local A.A. gets $14.15 ea. including tax. They are built like a tank. We'll see how it goes for the next 3-4k miles. So far I'm pleased with the K&N Gold.

FWIW, I recently switch over to a K&N and noticed no change at all. Apples to oranges, though, because mine truck is a completely different animal, with different oil. I Am testing the K&N along with some 15w40 syn (both free for the tests). The only thing I notice is that the oil pressure gauge comes up a little faster when the engine starts.

You can purchase all K&N filters online for 9.95, no shipping, from AJUSA.Com.

I switched to them years ago, they will go a year with no problem or 15,000 miles as well. As you know, I think oil filters are pretty much worthless appendages for filtration purposes so I go with the flow.
