I just purchased a 1995 mercury cougar with the 3.8 liter v6. of course it doesn't have the owners manual with it. it has 72k miles on it and i want to do a trans filter change. does anyone know what fluid it takes? i'm guessing dexIII/mercon. or were they still using type f?

It is DEX/MER but I am certain MERCRON V was back specd. So I would go with MERCON V. Also check on motorcraftservice.com you should be able to get a owners manual PDF from there.

I would use Valvoline Maxlife in that transmission. It's a Mercon V/LV fluid, that seems to hold up very well in the ford transmissions I've used it in.

i went to the motorcraft site and the farthest back they go is 1996. that is close enough. they do say to use mercon in the trans, so i guess i will use the few quarts of dex3/mer that i have laying around and finish the rest with the mercon 5 from here on out.

what i did find interesting is that they want you to use type f in the power steering. you would think they would want the same as the transmission in there. ohh well just something extra to buy.

Many people have put Mercon and Mercon V in Ford PS systems without problems, even if the P/S reservoir calls for Type F only. The thing that makes Mercon different from Type F is the way the transmission shifts gears. Since power steering systems don't have any of that stuff, Type F and Mercon act basically the same. What does make a difference is if you replace conventional ATF with synthetic.

Regular MD-3 fluid would be fine and on those older cars you could drain the touque converter on alot of them also. look for the hole in the bottom of the bell housing, may still have a rubber plug in it and rotate around untill you see a 1/8 pipe plug and there you go.

I wouldn't use anything but an ATF that plainly states in big, bold letters, MERCONV, on the front of the bottle. In fact, in vehicles that call for Mercon or MerconV I only use Motorcraft Mercon V, but other brands of MerconV should be OK.

The use of Dexron/Mercon or some other a magical, universal ATF that claims to be OK for almost everything, is alluring. But look away.

It's a fool's bargain.

There was no Mercon V when the car was made.
Then, MerconV was specifically NOT recommended for Mercon systems.
Then, it was retro spec'd.
Dex/Merc will be fine.

It is not foolish to do so.
