I have a 1994 Olds Cutlass Cruiser wagon that has been in the family since new, now has 97000 miles. I'm going to start putting a lot of highway miles on it for work and I want to do a trans service. I had the dealer drain and fill and replace the filter at 50K, about 7 years ago. I have a wix filter and gasket. Should I use MaxLife or Supertech Dex6? I do not see any official claim to meeting dex 6 specs on the MaxLife bottle, so I'm not sure which is better. They are both the same price at walmart.

Maxlife is a great fluid, but I would only use it if it meets your spec, guessing that would be Dex III? not sure. But only use it if it meets that spec. Otherwise get some Dex VI

1994 would be Dexron 3. Dexron 6 supercedes Dexron 2/3 so that is the correct fluid. Maxlife is an aftermarket fluid that is more desirable. Either choice in light years ahead of mineral based Dexron 3 that would be sheared to nothing in 30k miles of service. Maxlife has superior shear stability, dex 6 isn't bad either but not as good.

It does not have any "approvals". It only "recommended" for applications calling for... And I think Dex-VI is included in the current application list for MaxLife.

It's the "recommended" thing that concerns me. Why would I put any trust in anything but a specification that is officially met?

You wont find any fluid that is currently certified dexron III. if you are concerned about maxlife not being close enough to Dex III, dex VI is even further off.

No, @asand1, I was not concerned about closeness to Dex III, I was thinking that Dex VI was better in general because it, in fact, meets a spec, and that spec is supposed to be backward compatible with Dex III. I am getting the impression from people that Max Life might be a great idea to run in this car, however.

If you can get ACDelco's Canadian Dexron-VI, that is an excellent choice. Petro-Canada makes it for GM, and they are the original formulator along with Afton Chemical Corporation - it's what new vehicles get at the factory.

OK, I ended up using MaxLife. The fluid coming out after 8 years and 55K miles looked pretty good, but there was definitely a layer of very fine particulate at the bottom of the pan. Used brake cleaner and cleaned it. I put in a new wix filter. It did not press into place very convincingly, but I think the pan kind of holds it into place in addition to the metal ring where the filter attaches (which I did not attempt to replace).
