So in another section I posted about the lug nuts on my Fusion and getting them replaced under warranty. The service manager mentioned their techs use a 19.5mm socket for some lug nuts. Anyone heard of this or use a 19.5mm socket for lugs?

That's a new one on me...I keep cheap sockets in the lug nut sizes I encounter for taking off damaged lugs. I can take a 19mm no-name socket I found somewhere once and hammer that onto a swollen 19mm lug nut to get it off. Then I can toss both into the trash without worrying about how I'm going to extract the lug from the socket so I can reuse the socket later.

I suppose the techs use 19.5mm because most of the lugs are damaged, swollen or worn out and this is the solution. And for them to suggest their guys use a non standard socket pretty much affirms poor lug nuts is a known issue. The sockets are less expensive than lug nuts, maybe I will purchase one. I have been using a flip socket but if its going to chew up my nuts then I will probably give the 19.5mm a try.

3/4" is just over 19 mm (19.05 mm) so probably too small.

13/16" is 20.6 mm, so way too large. An ordinary 20 mm socket would be closer.

25/32" (if they exist) might be OK @ 19.8 mm.

Here's a novelty idea, Ford to put quality lug nuts on vehicles. I mean, its only the ONE thing holding the wheel to the vehicle.

Yeah, but once you go down that path, where do you stop? You'd have to have quality tires as they are the only thing separating you from the road, quality brakes as they are the only thing stopping you, quality motor oil as it's the only thing lubricating your engine... where else is a manufacturer supposed to cheapen out their product?

I have one. Flips for two sizes. Rust between lug nut and chrome plating on acorn lug nut means you either use a .5 mm larger socket or regular socket with a BFH.

I am not sure of the exact strength difference, but SS is not as strong as some of the stronger grades of steel. But its the chrome plating thats the real issue.

Stainless steel can be made strong enough for lug nuts. There are grades of stainless for that. Galling may be an issue, not to mention cost.

Careful...thoughtless musings like this could spell trouble for powerful people who run these companies. If word gets out that they could make a better product but aren't because...well, let's be honest, there's no good reason why...then those powerful figures within the companies that control us could get together and decide you are a liability to their status quo. Then you'll have black Suburbans following you everywhere and strange accidents happening all the time. You could try to sound the alarm and get help, but no one would believe you because it would sound so paranoid and fantastic.

In the end, just as the crippled blimp is falling out of the sky and directly toward you inside your stalled-out car, which BTW has no history of stalling but it is now, and it is now directly in the path of a blimp in the middle of crashing to the ground. It's at that moment that you will realize it was them who got you.

That's what they ultimately want - not only to get you, but for you to know that it was them that did the getting.

Galling would be nuts with stainless. What a nightmare! You'd need a specific anti-sieze paste and this would start WW3 in online forums and at the product-liability-anticipation lawyer/engineering office.

The problem with most swollen lug nuts is that they're a hard steel 18mm nut encased in a shiny metal outer layer. Junk gets in the interface between the two metals, or you get galvanic corrosion, and the "chrome" flakes off.

It's brilliant planned obsolescence as it's annoying but not a show-stopper.

Thanks for reminding me that I'm not buying any new, internet connected vehicles-although, the company Transit 250 has Sync-uh oh...

The best in the business. They have more work than they can handle.

More like FIVE things.

Well, 4, 5 or 6. 8 and 10 in the heavier trucks, right?

Oh wait, this is Ford... 7 isn't out of the question either.

Therapy seems a good option?
