With the realization that some cars come with syn from the factory, to some this might seem like a stupid thread.

Having been a mechanic for 20+ years I really don't see any issues if the engine is broken in properly. None the less I'm interested in feedback.

Recently bought an 07 2.2 ecotech and am strongly considering doing my first OC with PP around 1,500 miles and sticking with PP or a similar type oil from there on.

My initial idea was to do an inital OC with dino around 1000-1500 miles and again around 3,500-4,000 miles before making the syn switch. However, after being around a few of these engines after their initial break in I'm seriously wondering if the second "short" OCI is even necessary.

Any and all critic will be accepted.

That is fine on new car with OEM engines you are usualy fine to go to synthetic when ever you feel like it. Now if that was a remanufactured or a rebuilt engine I would caution against synthetic for at least the first 3000 miles.

Changed out the factory fill in my 2.2 ecotec HHR @ 1000 miles. Probably going to change @ 5000 to synthetic, Q-Horsepower because I am getting it free after rebates.

Go ahead and change it whenever you would like. I changed out my Mazda 3's factory fill oil at 243 miles and put in PP. It's just fine.

I went to synpower @ 600 miles in my subaru

It's working just fine!

waiting until 10k on our Pilot to switch over to PP. We ran the initial fill until the maintenance reminder as Honda uses special break in oil. Switched over to GTX- will run that for 2500 miles, switch again to a dino, run that for 2500 miles. By this time we should be over our 10k mark when I will make the switch to synthetic.

I'm not really sure if this is a drastic measure but I've read several places online to seat the seals in properly for 10k atleast on dino. Some have reported oil consumption down the road switching to synthetics early on.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't that myth been busted?

IIRC, isn't the Honda factory fill "special" only because it's high in moly?

Anyways, I waited until the 10K mile mark before switching to synthetic in my '03 Civic. Up until then it was still consuming dino oil at a pretty decent rate (1 quart in the first 1K miles, and then it went to 1 quart every 3K miles, then 1 quart every 5K, etc.).

Now that I'm running PP, it only burns about 1/8-1/4 quart every 10K miles (car's at 45K on the odo) which isn't bad considering that I run the car fairly hard on a daily basis.

I switched my 1992 C1500 4.3 @1,500. Now @ 207,000. Puffs some smoke on start-up; valve seals. Burns a quart about 2-3,000 miles. You make the call.

Most syns GpIII and GpIV are not a whole much better wear wise than dino oils as break in goes. I would do another dino run though to get some more wear particles out from the break in.
