I finally broke down and went to get a new eye wear prescription.
I tend to break lots of eye wear, and I'm tired of paying $200 for a pair of glasses.
I went to America's best and got a free eye exam and 2 pairs of glasses for $75 including tax.
I then ran into this review....

I've been buying from ZenniOptical.com for awhile now. I punched myself in the face (after removing my glasses) for having paid well over $100 for the same type of glasses in the ripoff stores. I paid $120 for my daughter's glasses a few years ago, and they didn't even have polycarbonate lenses or anti-scratch and anti-reflective coatings (those options would have cost an additional fortune).

I also bought (on Amazon.com) for roughly $12 (including shipping) the same basic titanium ring my brother-in-law got taken for to the tune of $300 at a local retail jewelery store.

I've been thinking about trying mail order for years when it comes to glasses. I know a lot of people who have been very happy with the experience.

I have horrible vision and a very strong prescription and it's been my experience that if I don't pay extra for very thin lenses, that it's easy to wind up with Coke bottle glasses. I did try a local discount glasses shop and was very unhappy with their premium glasses. They were thick and had a slight distortion around the periphery, as well as a very subtle grayish hue. My old Army issue glasses were the same way -- the lenses were probably a half inch thick.

I wish I could find the same quality of lenses that my eye doctor offers without paying $300 for a new set.

So buy a really cheap pair. Even with lens upgrades, they'll be inexpensive. If they're not up to par, keep them as a backup.

We bought 4 pairs of eyeglasses from Zenni Optical with great success 3 years ago. We paid less for all four pair shipped (two regular, two prescription sunglasses) including polycarbonate lenses, antiscratch & antiglare coatings than we did for just plain lenses without any coatings the last time I bought one pair from a regular store. Going to order another set very soon. It's very, very handy to have extra pairs and prescription sunglasses.

One caution: find out your pupilary distance (PD) from your current prescription.

I've used LBW Eyewear for years for both my wife and myself, same type of deal as Zenni only on the west coast.

I've had the lenses checked at the VA Eye Clinic and they say they match the perscription perfectly, what more does one want.

Zenni asks for the pupil distance. That's rarely listed on a perscription form the optician gives you. You have to ask or have them check it first before ordering.
Keep track of the order; should you want just new lenses, the frames should be around a long time, at least the standard styles.

My 2¢

I got one pair from Zenni and the wife has bought about a dozen. She already had shoes to match every outfit, so she needed matching glasses too, of course. All have been as nice as anything anywhere else, but at $10-15 a shot what do you have to lose? They are as nice as my well-to-do friend's latest $500 pair. Ugh.

If you need to keep the lens as thin as possible you have to go with glass lenses with a high refractive index. There are only a few companies that produce this type glass. Also, high quality glass does not come cheap.

Plastic lenses, like polycarbonate lenses, will always be thicker, and also optically inferior to the best glass lenses. I'd scratch plastic lenses very quickly.

The quality of anti-reflective coatings is also reflected in price. Dust and dirt-repellent coatings are also fairly expensive. While a high price by itself doesn't guarantee high quality, if you are informed and know what you are buying, you get the best value.

I think your vision may be impaired due to bad glasses.

Yeah, they don't cost $500, so they must be garbage. Only they aren't.

High-index glass is heavier than regular glass. Go for it if you want them to weigh as much as half a brick. And be sure never to get hit in the face while wearing them. Glass, impact, you know the rest.

I had very good luck with Zennioptical.com. I would definitely recommend them! Just received my second pair of glasses with progressive lenses from Zenni, very happy with both pairs.
The glasses came with hard plastic case, a microfiber cleaning cloth and a nice little pupil distance measuring ruler. How thoughtful they are!

I just tried this out. Came in good time too. My cheap pair I got from walmart back in 2002 finally meet their doom by the hands of my son. He broke them right in half. I went cheap and got a pair of 6.95 frames with the free of charge lenses. With shipping it was 11.90. Figured 12bucks is not to much of a risk. If i like what i get i'll go for something better.

You got that backwards. High-index glass makes for much thinner and lighter lenses. If you buy inexpensive high-index lenses (~$100 per lens)there will be noticeable chromatic aberration. Zeiss makes the best high index glass.

As for getting hit in the face, if that happens to you frequently, you should go of course with polycarbonate lenses. For anybody else tempered glass will do fine. Of course it doesn't come cheap either.

Yeah that was for the frame and lense. Keep in mind i went with the free lense. My eyesight isnt that bad and i wont be wearing these all day. Just when I'm not wearing my contacts to give my eyes a rest. So I didnt opt for "higher end" lenses.

One thing to consider though is a thorough retinal exam periodically.

I say that bc I had a precancerous retina lesion 30 years ago. At that time I needed to go to a retina oncologist at Wills eye.

Now I go to an optometrist that has a retina scanning machine that is light years beyond what even eye surgeons had 10 years ago. Not many optometrists have this device.

I would consider locating one and have it done periodically, especially if over 50.

Wow!

I've used zenni. One thing to note if you are like me, the glasses never fit just right. So you will have to have someone bend them and such. My Walmart does it for free.

Thanks for the reminder. I just ordered another pair. $11.95+$4.95 shipping. I had to get new pair of motorcycle riding sunglasses. My others are grey and I wanted an Amber pair as well.
