This is a very spot on post. I am personally in the "dont use it/ haven't tried it" camp, but meh. Filters are cheap compared to an engine failure. This is my logic behind it at least.

And RockAuto has LOTS of other filters for $3 each, or less. Heck, the EcoGard is less than $1.50 each, and those seem to be pretty decent filters, based on what I've seen posted here.

As to your statements of cost, I was looking for a decent brand name filter at a value, not necessarily the cheapest filter cost to be had and would have gone with a $1.86 Ecogard I can get delivered through walmart.com if I was wanting the cheapest route.

I understand. Quality is an important thing to you, and in this case you were hoping for a great price. In this case, I was comparing the overall remaining physical integrity of potentially 13-year-old AC Delco filters to those of something like an Ecogard, Supertech, etc..

IMHO, a 'brand new' Supertech, Ecogard, or Motorcraft would be substantially better quality, and more reliable, than a 13-year-old Delco.. and honestly, at least based on what has been posted here of the three, I would consider Supertech, Ecogard, and Motorcraft to be perfectly fine quality for a standard OCI, especially the Motorcraft @ $4.

Seller has issued me a return shipping label and will get a full refund. So no cut open pics.

Thanks for the input.

Good on the seller for agreeing to take the filters back. Only on BITOG where someone will actually look into the age of the filters and demand a refund if it's not recent stock.

Not knocking the OP. Just making an observation.

Surprised you got a full refund because the parts were correctly described as NOS = new OLD stock. Buyer beware, should have asked the age of the filters before bidding.

I've run new "old" oil filters countless times.

I don't know where this old wive's tale keeps coming from.

I agree... new old stock means you shouldn't expect brand spanking new filters.

If it were up to me, I would say you did wrong and I would side with the seller.

Your Wrong!

Check your glasses. No where in the listing title or description mentions "New Old Stock", "NOS" or any derivative there of. It is listed as "New in Case".

I think the low information crowd is confusing suggested ad listings that Ebay inserts into the page list other "NOS" auctions, but the auction I listed does not.

The seller probably has no idea about oil filters aging. He/she wanted to keep a clean feedback record is why the refund. Ebay would have forced the refund anyway. All these "new" goods on ebay may be physically "new" but unless it is sold by a valid retailer, they are pre-owned with no warranty.

My apologies. My glasses are fine as I could see the big 1995 date on the box in the photos.

Sure. I use NOS filters all the time and sleep very well at night. Worried about rust? Cut one open. Think only old filters can have rust? Think again.

I actually appreciate the quality of some older filters, before the cumulative generational cost-cuts. Treated paper and glass media don't spontaneously "go bad", that's hilarious. Silicone ADBVs don't harden and while nitrile ADBVs would logically be expected to harden, experience has not highlighted that as an issue. Even a 30+ year old nitrile valve from an ancient Tokyo Roki felt as pliable as a new one.

What am I supposed to be worried about?
