Unless someone else can point to it, I have yet to see a grenade engine from using 5w30 when 5W-20 was the factory spec.

Thats fine. But I not talking about that. the other person seems to think I cant tell a difference going from 5w30 to 5W-20. And I most certainly can feel a difference. Not everything is a placebo affect.

I can attest to the "butt dyno" difference between 20wt and 30wt oil. Recently, I changed oil in my Civic to a 5w30 for the summer. Low end torque is reduced a little but no other performance seems to have been affected. The shift points are also a bit off from using a 20wt oil. The engine does run quieter and seems to be smoother overall. I kinda like the feel I get from 30wt oil in the Civic.

Gas mileage took a huge hit though. It is now averaging 35.862, compared to my normal average of 36.321.

I am not talking to you but to the OP. Had I want to comment on you, I would have quoted you.

If they're still putting 5w30 in everything, well, don't go there for an oil change unless you want 5w30.

Let's just say that an individual who works at one told me they were told that their 5w30 is "sufficient" for most applications.

I think you and I both know he isn't going to be destroying any engines with that, but it's still wrong. If it's a privately owned shop and you personally know the owner it's understandable you might have to ignore his little cheat. If it's a corporate owned store or it's privately owned but you don't have any strong connection, why not take a few minutes to talk to whoever runs the show about integrity? Even if the way things are done don't change right away you might be planting a seed, so to speak.

I used 30 wt oils all the time in my 2.3 duratec ranger. Never noticed much difference. In fact I posted a UOA on 30 wt oil with excellent wear results in 07.

At my last OC, the local garage I took it to used VWB 5w30 in my Tribute, even though right on the oil cap it clearly calls for 5W-20.

Doesn't bother me, it's just interesting. When I worked at a WM TLE, they were totally ANAL about putting the correct grade of oil in a car - if you got it wrong, the car came right back in and got drained and re-filled.

I wouldn't consider 35.862 versus 36.321 to be a "huge hit." Companies moved from 5w30 to 20 to get the absolute peak gas mileage (which most of the time equates to roughly .5 mpg.) In the grand scheme of things I wouldn't be worried. Good quality motor oil and general maintenance will keep the truck running for a long time.

I always thought that the thicker the oil the higher the oil temp, so why run thicker oil in the summer when it's already hotter out?
