My dad has a diesel truck, he thought he scored a killer deal on some Rotella oil for it online so he bought 3 cases. It turns out its 10w30 instead of 15w40. He doesnt want to use the 10w30 and he said hes not sending it back. My Honda has the 3.5 v6 and specs 5w20. Would it be ok to use the 10w30 in it? I would hate to pass up free oil!

What year is the Honda? If it's still under warranty, I would not want to start servicing it with a thick 10w30. If it's out of warranty, it'll work fine, but MPG's won't be quite as good, and the engine 'may' be sluggish....which is probably made up for by the fact that it's free oil.

I've used 10w30 w/o problems in my 5w20 spec'd Accord in summer. With winter coming I'd use the 5w20 and save the 10w30 for warmer months.

if you wunna thin out the oil a tad and clean up your engine, mix in some MMO (marvel mystery oil). 1qt per oil change will drop it down to about a 5w20 viscosity

You could run 1 qt 5w30 Syntec and the balance of the 10w30, though this IS a thick 30 and you'll loose some HP cannot recommend for cold winter use.

I think I'd try to sell it and use the correct oil if it were my Honda. However you can probably run it during the summer in OHIO IF the Honda is out of waraanty. GO BUCKEYES.

I have run all kinds of oil in my 97 accord (no longer own) sold at 260k with no motor problems or any problems for that matter.. other than molding and some paint fade... Some oils I ran HDEO 15-40, 5w-40, even gasp 20w-50 ... this was either free or cheap oil except the HDEO oil which I really like. If your car is under warranty I wouldn't want to fight the lawyers in case of an engine problem, but if out of warranty I would have no problem running the 10w30 Rotella, and I would also mix half, and half with a synthetic 0/5w-20 and your free Rotella 10w30 before mixing it with anything mystery !!

On edit this was not a v6 rather a I4
