Nope-just familiar.

With your daily commute I dont see why you couldnt go at least 7500 miles on dino. Just check the dip stick weekly and do a uoa to make sure that you can safely go that far if not more. It is not the oil that gets depleted, it is the add pack

Use Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 and 3 ounces of Auto-Rx. Run it for at least 7.5k miles. Perform an OCI and repeat with the PP and Auto-Rx. UOA that second run and regardless of what The Critic thinks of UOAs when not done in large quantities, consider running that PP and Auto-Rx (maintenance dose) out to 9-10k miles, depending upon the initial UOA results.

And use Dyson Analysis. If you're only going to perform two or three UOAs during your first 100k miles, you might as well get your money's worth.

Dino runs to 10k? Even with that amount of highway miles? Nah!

The trending you're referring to is to determine if something is wrong, as in "unusual" with the engine. The oil is immediately apparent. It'll tell you if the visc held ..any coolant, fuel or moisture is present and the flashpoint. It will tell you (assuming you do TBN/TAN) if it's still suitable for continued use.

That's about the most reliable thing that UOA can do ..even for a novice.

Stay tuned.

Maybe I'll get the UOA with a TBN? (I will)

Later this year I plan for a 10k OCI in the Toyota.

The oil will be spent. You'll have some build up on the rings, but it will make it. In fact the car will probably die by impact, before death by dino at 10K OCI's. This does not apply to many other cars, but Honda will do it.

Just follow the OLM!!

The difference if using synthetic, the oil would do it in a breeze. In fact in my Honda Ody, I'm gonna just reset the OLM every other time.

College in CALIFORNIA no less!

Seriously though, Mike, I've got to agree with Gary on this one. So long as you don't read too much into a UOA, even a single sample can yield good info.

Thanks for everyone's input.

Here's my plan. My next oil change will probably come up in about 1-2 weeks. I'm going to use a synthetic (probably Mobil 1 5w-20) and run it around 10k; then do an oil analysis. I'll do that a few times (to trend the data) unless my first UOA reveals that the OCI should be shorter.

Thanks again.

I just changed oil at 5K. It was quite dirty.(cold midwest winter) Have run 5K OCI's on Havoline Dino Old formula since new. The car uses no oil and my oil changes have cost about $10. My car is worth $10 to me, to make sure it has clean oil.

My wife has about a 10 mi. inner city commute with her 2006 Honda Civic. We follow the OLM and it generally gives an indication to change at about 6K mi. The oil doesn't look all that bad either. With this car, I think the OLM is right on the money.

Not quite 10K and is a blend, so maybe not too applicable, but:

Durablend 10w40 boosted to more than double zddp:
