Is that engine DI?

It's port injection, not DI.

I've had jugs of M1 0W-40 in my garage for nearly a year. Bought at AAP I think.

Woops I didn't state "at Walmart". How much were the jugs at AAP?

OK. There was a thread somewhere (can't find it now) where a member quoted a Mobil technician as saying GF6 is being developed around lower sulfated ash content because DIs apparently don't like SA. IIRC, M1 5w30 has lower SA than 0w30 and much much lower than 0W-40. That sealed the deal for me on 5w30, at least in the M1 lineup. PP doesn't list SA content in their 4/11 specs. Anybody know what it is?

Same price as the rest with oil+filter special. $32.99???
Came with a M1 filter FWIW.
I bought it to try in my DI turbo because I get fuel dilution and Mazda has warned about oils

I think before moving to 0w40, try something with HTHS around 3.2. If it's still getting way too diluted or shearing, THEN move up to something with 3.5-3.8.

That would work Grambo. If you want to maintain warranty, you'll be dumping it well before its time. Garak sticks with PYB 5w30 during warranty and I am staying with PU SN 5w30.

PP and PU seem to work well in these engines, but M1 is perfectly great, also. The short OCI specified under warranty almost negates the benefit of synthetics. I use them because I value my time...I am going to spend the time changing, I might as well get a synthetic oil for the price of someone putting conventional in there for me.

I have a 2011 G37S 7AT Coupe.

I'd consider a 0w-20 only if I were short tripping in the winter with it stored outside. That would be a scenario where the oil would never get up to temperatures anyhow. Heck, Audi allowed 20 grades years ago under such situations, but 15w40 the rest of the time.

So, obviously, thin oil won't kill even a German motor speced for 15w40, provided it's used when prudent.

Mine works fine on PYB at half the price of synthetics. I'm going to do a UOA or two one of these times yet; I know everyone is curious.

If you're going synthetic, I see no problem with the 0w30 you chose, either. I haven't seen the M1 0w30 up around here yet, but I haven't specifically looked, either.

PU is almost impossible to find here, but PP is regularly rolled back to what I'd consider an attractive price - less than PYB's regular price.

Is the VQ series known to not run well with M1 0w-40?

I met a guy with an '09 370z(same engine as G37) last week that runs M1 15w-50 in the hot Cali summers and still averages 20mpg (same as when he used 0w-40).

That would be counter-productive as it's heavier than all premium light 5w30s.

If you want to maximize fuel economy, as has been mentioned, go easy on the gas and pump up the tires.
And if you go easy on the gas; i.e., you don't use WOT, then yes you could run a 0W-20 oil since you won't be using WOT when the engine is hot. Still I wouldn't recommend it's use without an oil pressure gauge.

What I would recommend is simply running PP 5w30 as it's the lightest OTC 30wt, even lighter than M1 0w30 for your climate.

I'm sure they would run very well on the M1 0w-40, and I haven't seen a lot of problems on the M1 0w-40 UOAs in that application. I'm sure a 15w40 or 15w-50 would work very well, too. It's just that it's speced for a 5w30 SM/GF-4 or better, so that's what I'm going to stick to, at least for warranty.

I'm generally one to follow the manufacturers' recommendation on various vehicles, sticking with the middle and thinner ones if they offer any leeway. After warranty, there's always room to experiment, if one finds a reason to do so.

Other Canadians have used Blackstone, so I'm considering trying a UOA or two with them. Their bulk pack looks kind of attractive to me.

Being out of warranty definitely frees one up to experiment. That's not to say that the manufacturer is always right (or always wrong) in the first place, either.

Some might argue that a thicker oil would be prudent in these engines. I'd argue that a better oil cooling system would be the first thing to be done.

If I try a 15w40, Trav will look at me funny because I'm ignoring all the 5w-40 and 0w-40 grades with sensible VIs and CATERHAM will look at me as if I were simply nuts.

Don't worry, CATERHAM, I told you before I got rid of all the 15w40.

It's safely in the possession of the person who now has the Audi, 150 miles out of my reach. The pail is gone forever.

The nissan VQ engines were never designed for a light weight oil. Use a xw30 or xw40 weight if you live in hot climates.

Just like Caterham says, you must know the temp and pressures before you make a decision.

I'd try it. I tried 0w30 in my car which specs 40W. It was fine for any normal driving duties.
