I recently switched to Amsoil and here is the first analysis at 5,000 miles. About 1/2 was highway and the balance was city driving. I wanted to try their extended drain interval, but based on the fuel in the oil I assume I will have to change it soon. During the oil interval I ran a bottle of Amsoil P.i. Performance Gasoline Additive. Prior to Amsoil I was running Mobil 1 5w30 extended interval synthetic oil. I would appreciate any thoughts.

Comments: Data flagged for observation only; FUEL DILUTION is at a MINOR LEVEL; FUEL DILUTION has caused viscosity to decrease moderately; Total Base Number is SLIGHTLY LOW; Flagged additive levels are higher than expected for the lubricant that is identified (This does not imply that the lubricant does not meet proper API, SAE or ISO classifications.);

At first I thought the fuel was a mistake, but that visc does look thin. Everything else looks really good, so I'm not sure what's up. How did you take the sample without draining the oil? Did you ever get a sample of M1?

Strange. WAY too much fuel for the type of driving... or any driving for that matter. Try another 5k and see what happens without any additives.

Also, why aren't you using a 20W? Isn't that what Honda specs? It sheared to a 20W anyways...

To take the sample I used a small pump from Amsoil that takes the oil out through the oil dipstick tube. Unfortunately, I did not have any of the Mobil 1 analyzed.

Not too bad. Stay at 5k oci. Run an oem spec 5-20. You could save some filter money with an M1.

If this fuel dillution shows up on another UOI, I'd stick with a cheaper oil and 5000 or 7500 OCI's. But I assume it's a one time deal, maybe some short trips before the sample was taken, or something in the pump/tubing/container?

That engine is specd 5w30 elsewhere, so I wouldn't worry about 30wt. You are running 20 wt now, though, at 8.7...

I'm most amazed by the fact that the original poster of this thread has been a member since the very beginning of this site, but only just today made his first two posts! So I guess we need to welcome him finally! Glad you finally came out of your shell after all these years!

Make sure next time you take a sample the car is thoroughly hot. like 1/2 hour at least. Maybe that's part of the dilution problem.

That could be part of the problem. I only ran the car for about 15 minutes prior to taking the sample. The engine temperature was normal, but that was probably not enough time for the oil. I will take another sample at at about 8000 miles or sooner if necessary and make sure to run the car for at least 30 minutes.

I was driving, not idling for about 15 minutes before I took the sample. The air filter is the original filter. I have not yet changed it. I have not done any other maintenance except for oil & filter changes. I use 87 octane gas and most has 10% ethanol. Even though my profile is Indianapolis I am currently living in SC.

Steve

I really liked the Amsoil Pi. I've used the Lube Control FP 60, but I liked the Amsoil Pi better. I used it on both my vehicles and noticed a significant difference. I plan on continuing to use the Amsoil Pi as recommended every 4k miles.

That is a LOT of fuel dillution. It will zap an oil. Honda's fuel management uses extra fuel to lower emissions. I have the same issue, but only 1.5%.
