Yes it will work fine, I had a P1 as a coolant filter on my car for a year with very minimal media distortion as a result of it. You can't use the string method unless the 2 sides are exactly parallel and centered side to side by making sure the front hubs and rear hubs are spaced equally (F and R can be differrent, as long as the LR and RR match, same for the front). (It is impossible with only 2 jack stands and one string)

I had one of those with the exact same symptom, except for me it wasn't so much just getting brighter; it would appear to be totally dead, but when you give it a whack, it would come back to life. No clue as to why it happens though...

An oxalic acid solution will easily take that out if it's corrosion/sludge related deposits. Some of the flush kits you have used may be Oxalic based, but most arent so it should help you quite a bit. I would also add a coolant filter for the remainder of the vehicles life because getting it...
