Not to consider adjusting one's OCI for particularly severe operating habits and conditions is foolish. Making a blanket claim that "..it's all junk after 10k miles. If you have a BMW change it at 5k. Or pay with sludge. I don't care what brand of oil you use, you are gonna get screwed with...

    BMW Longlife Question

I'd guess the engine for which a clogging CCV is a common problem, especially in colder climates, is the one that has the problems.

Why do so many people want to run 0 weight oils?

Personally, I find the whole question of 0W-xx oils to be a great weeder question in any given oil discussion. Those that clearly don't understand what the SAE J300 viscosity ratings actually mean soon reveal themselves as soon as the question of 0W-xx oils comes up. Some are educable after that...

Maybe try a different fuel brand, or same brand but different station, or switch to premium if you aren't already using it. While Chevron is generally good stuff, maybe there's something odd in the local blend. I don't suppose you can recall anything you did differently fuel-wise in 2008 than...

The high copper seems to have a correlation with higher moly. I'm not sure what mechanism would cause that, but a switch to a low moly oil such as GC or AFL might be a good experiment. (yes, I know you've got some high copper with GC on other UOA's, but that might be due to a flushing effect...

    BMW M3 oil

A 1998 M3 would have the S52 engine and it also predates most of BMW's oil specs. In the BMW TIS this engine falls in the "other" category and takes some interpolation - basically, I'd shoot for a minimum of ACEA A3 with BMW LL-01 preferred, in the Xw-40 range.
